I occasionally find eggs here and there that I missed the day before or what have you, so just how long are eggs okay to eat once the hen lays it and before it is refridgerated?
Thx ya'll... ;-)
Well, I am afraid it is indeed fowl pox, it has spread to their cheeks and I see it is white when it starts... I was hoping it was frost bite or something... They sure seem healthy otherwise, do I cull them out of the flock right now?
On an up note, WE HARVESTED OUR FIRST EGG TODAY!!!!! ;-)
My flock is apx 5 months old now, and the roosters are quite large now, and looking very healthy as is the flock as a whole, however I am noticing some black spots, almost like maybe peck bites, or something, they are blackish, I want to know if this is typical, or is it something I should be...
Our girls are 5 months old now, free ranging around our property and are doing great. But we have a quick question, as far as egg laying goes is it typical that the girls will return to the coop and their nest box to lay or will we have eggs all over the property?

The girls explore, poke around, find and discover all the ever...
We have had our flock since Nov 9th of 2011, so they are just over 3 months old.
We change their pine shavings regularly, as needed, and everything has gone very well.
In fact the coop has really been a pretty sanity place, for a coop, and any smells aside from a slight chicken odor have...
The boxes are standard construction, they do have a 3" board on the front to hold the bedding inside, and I suspect though I haven't actually seen it, that they are roosting on that board?
They are only 9 weeks old, does that have anything to do with it?
Thanks!
New site looks cool too... ;-)
We have great success using a dogproof trap with a can of tuna as the lure.
Of course a little quiet time on the porch with a cold beer and a .22 on your lap will do the trick too... ;-)
