Blood in Nest Box - Not in Poop - Not a lot

For the last couple of days when I have checked the nest box; there has been bright red blood on the wood chips. I have checked her poop and it is not in the poop. The blood is definitely separate. She has not be laying lately (could be time of year or this issue). Last night I reached in...

Boy or girl? Who's it's Mama? My first hatch with my first broody hen from my first flock.

And, he came from a brown egg. All my hens lay brown eggs. Hardly tell the difference.

Here's Daddy. Isn't anyone going to give me hope for a hen?

Boy or girl? Who's it's Mama? My first hatch with my first broody hen from my first flock.

This is our first offspring. My rooster is (supposedly) Black Australorp. My three hens are: Speckled Sussex, Buff Orpington, and Buff Brahma. My Brahma was my broody; so I'm fairly sure she isn't the biological mama. She had been broody for at least a month before I left her one egg...

Rooster to Hen Ratio Too High. We purchased 5 chicks for our daughter last spring. Unfortunately, two of them started crowing. At this point I think we can keep one; but, that means one has to find a new farm. I think he is amazing in color. But, the hens don't care. I won't ship; so, don't...

Hens and children sharing wood play structure? Issues?

I abandoned the idea of converting the play structure. Instead we built a freestanding coop and run. As I look at it now, I am not sure they would have had enough room with the original idea. My birds got pretty big.

    Red Rangers - 8 weeks - live weight 4 to 6.25 pounds - thoughts??

@ldube Four months for a reply to you isn't bad. Coloring or staining from the feathers on the skin or meat of the red rangers? I haven't seen any. The processor said I may see a dye dot but I haven't even seen that.

    Lessens learned

Regarding the discussion here about where to "chill", "refrigerate", or "rest" 25 birds after process - My thought was that I would be using my gi-normous Costco sized ice chest (rotating birds and adding fresh ice each day) for the 3 days (or so). Am I out of my mind? Or, will this work...

More update: 6 days until process appointment. Largest weighs 7 lbs and smallest is 5. That means in the last 5 days; the gain was between 3/4 and 1 pound each. Keep the feedback coming. I need all the help I can get.

    Red Rangers - 8 weeks - live weight 4 to 6.25 pounds - thoughts??

We have a processing appointment. I know many of you do this yourself; I am happy to pay for this service. Again, these are Red Rangers and they will be 9 weeks and 5 days old at process. When I made the appointment they asked if I wanted to keep the giblets. DO I? Help. Do I? Also, I...

    Red Rangers - 8 weeks - live weight 4 to 6.25 pounds - thoughts??

My first experience with chickens. Feed store sign said Red Rangers.....freedom ranger cross I assume?.. Store's chicken expert said they take 3 weeks longer to finish than Cornish cross. Yesterday was week 8. I weighed the smallest today at 4 pounds and the largest at 6.25 pounds. Any...

http://reviews.costco.com/2070/11257173/sunray-premium-playgrounds-sunray-premium-playground-reviews/reviews.htm Well, it's snowing to beat the band here right now - happy spring! And, it's dark outside. So, here's a link to the website that shows our playset. The hens would occupy the...

Hens and children sharing wood play structure? Issues?

Our children have a wood play structure; slide, climbing wall, swings, fort, etc. We have decided that the perfect place for the new coop would be the underneath area that the children never use. The area is 7 x 3, space for an enclosed area and a run attached, paver access from the house...
