This is my first attempt at building a chicken coop. I built it on the back of our garage, and the access is through the garage. Hopefully I didn't do anything horribly wrong that will require major modifications. But I'm looking for constructive criticism. We are in NW Indiana. Thanks for your...
Thanks for the post. We've actually had that happen twice before when there were 2 eggs with soft shells. Other than that, I've had no reason to suspect it happened again, but who knows?

For some strange reason, most of our hens are laying their eggs outside, near the coop. Yesterday I saw one egg in a newly dug hole near the coop, but I left it there to be gathered later in the day. A little later, I went out there, and the egg was completely gone - no shell fragments or...
I haven't posted in a while, but thought I'd share this one.
BOB THE CHICKEN
Bob came home drunk one night, slid into bed beside his sleeping wife, and fell into a deep slumber.
He awoke before the Pearly Gates, where St. Peter said, 'You died in your sleep, Bob.'
Bob was...
We've had a hen sitting in the nest for about 3 months! Today I decided to get her off the nest, and clean out the eggs. When I threw some treats in the chicken yard, she came running out to get some. Aha! I closed the door so she couldn't get back in, and decided this was a good time to clean...
One possible problem with using pallets. You probably don't know what they were used for, and they might have been contaminated with something that is not good for chickens or other living things. They might be OK if well covered.

Thanks for the quick reply. It's pretty much what I expected, but I wanted to be sure before I did anything. A little extra work might prevent being sorry later.

I'm strongly considering adding a little more room to our coop. We have a concrete floor in the coop, but adding on, I'd like to consider having a plywood floor. I seem to remember reading that a wood floor should be raised a foot or more above the ground. Is this correct? And if so, what is the...
Yes, 4 of the hens also had very minor frostbite. There is no indication that there is an abundance of moisture or a draft problem, though. But I do let them outside unless it is zero or below, or we have a blizzard like we just had. They love being outside, and I'm convinced that is where they...
I'm posting this in case someone might be considering getting chickens, and they're looking for a little information.
Beginning Jan. 6 through Feb 4, our 6 hens have produced 128 eggs. That comes out to a little over 4 eggs per day, average. Although we don't weigh the eggs, I think most would...
For the first time, we got a speckled egg! It is much smaller than the others we're getting, maybe half the size. Has anyone else had an egg like this from a Speckled Sussex?
