    Chicken won't use nest box

Thank you for your help! I'm going to get some fake eggs and in the meantime we will take the suggestion to put today's egg in the nest box and replace it with tomorrow's and take that one in. Do the eggs have to be the same colour? These ladies lay brown eggs.

    Chicken won't use nest box

I don't have fake eggs in the nest box... should I keep some in there? They've kicked some of the straw out so they've explored it. I will look into these fake eggs!

    Chicken won't use nest box

Hello there.. I have a red sexlink pullet that just started to lay but she's ignoring the nest box and laying on the manure board. is there any way I can get her to start using the nest box? I have two others who are going to start laying and I'm worried that they are going to copy her. I...

Questions about the deep litter method

I very much appreciate that you took the time to write this long and informative post. I am in Canada (near Ottawa, Ontario). My barn has a central alley with large double doors that stay open all summer so it's like stalls on either side of a breezeway, but our winters can be pretty cold and...

Questions about the deep litter method

Thank you for explaining this...it makes a lot of sense. My barn is a pole barn, so under the mats is stone dust (some people call it crusher dust) which is a very fine gravel. I think if I removed the mats there would be moisture because it's essentially the bare ground. It's damp enough...

Questions about the deep litter method

I'm definitely going to do poop boards... I still have to build the "furniture" as they are now using a temporary perch. They are 12 weeks old. Does Stall Dry or Stable Boy do the same thing as PDZ? My feed store doesn't carry it... Also, how well does it work for smells? Will it completely...

Questions about the deep litter method

Hello there... I have done a little reading about the deep litter method and it intrigues me. I love the idea of fewer chores and less work as well as the idea of having really good compost. But..... I have such a hard time believing that it doesn't smell. My setup is a converted horse...

How Many Inches of Mulch for Run?

One thing I'd like to mention in case it's important to someone is that most straw has been sprayed with Round up or something similar when it was growing to get rid of weeds. Not sure if it's persistent and present at the time of baling but there is very little available straw available that...

    12x10 Turkey Tractor

I know this is a very old thread but I'm wondering if anyone has made this or something similar... I'm wondering how well it holds up to being moved, how heavy it is and how well it works... We are looking into options for tractors and I love the way this one looks but worry that it would come...

Do roosts really need to be 18" from wall to avoid poop on wall?

The trajectory thing makes sense... I'm thinking of doing 15" from the wall and having a single roost over the manure board. How far above the manure board should the perch be? I'm thinking 6-8"?

Do roosts really need to be 18" from wall to avoid poop on wall?

Hello there... I'm reading conflicting information about this and I'm wondering if there are any of you who have perches less than 18" off of the wall, and if you have poop on the wall. One post I read was from a member who had 12" between same level roosts and they said that their chickens...

    Grow out pen for poults

Yes, the smell will have to be controlled... Right now what I do is go in every day with one of those shovel/rake things for picking up dog poop and scrape any soiled shavings off the surface and add clean bedding as necessary... It's more work but seems to be effective. Hopefully it's enough...

    Grow out pen for poults

Hello there... We are in the process of setting up for turkeys. We are in Canada and temps in the spring can go well below freezing at night so too cold for poults. They will be going into tractors or pens (haven't decided which yet) when they are old enough. We were thinking that they will...

    Man! These birds can fly!

We are very new to turkeys and have been researching heritage breeds... We were told that they can get out of anything that doesn't have a "roof". We bought some inexpensive netting to do the top of our run which has 8' walls.

    Tractor questions

First of all I want to thank everyone for helping me with this. I really appreciate your taking the time to respond and it's been very helpful. After all of your input I'm not sure about using a tractor in the pasture at all. We get heatwaves and droughts and if I mow there won't be much for...
