4 week Dark Cornish, or Dark Cornish x?

Hello Everyone, I have one 4 week old chick that is either pure Dark Cornish, Dark Cornish x Cuckoo Maran, or Dark Cornish x Giant Jersey. Any ideas which? Thanks for your help!

    ode to the broody

I agree with everything Sunny Side Up said (I learned the hard way) - but also, when it comes time for the chicks to start hatching, you don't want the early hatchers to be mixing with the rest of the hens (who may peck them to death) while the momma hen is still sitting on the nest waiting for...

mixing broody hens and chicks *update - oh no!*

Well, it turns out the hens weren't defensive of each others chicks - the still broody mom has adopted the lone chick! Which sounds cute, a little chick running around with two watchful moms, but it means that the other broody is now off her eggs and I'm scrambling to set up some sort of...

mixing broody hens and chicks *update - oh no!*

I have 4 hens - two of which went broody about a month ago. At first I had all the hens together and my Silkie hatched out 3 chicks - 2 of which didn't survive because they were attacked by the non-broody hens while my Silkie was still on the nest trying to hatch out the remainder eggs. So I...

chick ate fiber glass & blood in poop

Don't blame yourself - it may not be the fibreglass at all, and it sounds like you're doing everything you can to help them. Last year my chicks (would have been 8 weeks old or so at the time) were pulling fibreglass out of a crack in the coop and ate a lot of it before I noticed and fixed the...

    Do Silkies lay year long?

My silkie was the last of my birds to begin laying at around 9 months of age... and then she went broody about two weeks later! So hopefully she'll lay in the winter, since it's beautiful spring weather and she's not laying now! She is beautiful and the sweetest of my birds though - totally...

Blue Laced Red Wyandottes - Pullets or Roos???

I was raising two BLRW chicks - there are some photos of them in this thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=226322 at 5 weeks and 9 weeks old... there wasn't a lot of difference at 9 weeks, but my hunch on which was which at that point turned out to be correct (1st BLRW...

who is my new egg from?

Well, I've now concluded that the new layer is the BLRW. The eggs haven't really gotten any bigger yet, but I've caught the BLRW in the nest box a couple of times now. Now I wonder how long I'll have to wait for the Silkie to finally start laying?! Luckily, she earns her keep in friendliness.

    easter egger shaved

I know how you feel - mine is looking just as sad I really miss her big, beautiful beard! I'm just hoping it's a temporary moulting thing, and that it will grow back soon. I haven't seen any mites, and she seems otherwise healthy.

I should take out the eggs right?

I would take out the eggs and eat them... but I would maybe put some golf balls in there though - your first hen seemed to know where to lay, but it can't hurt to give the others a hint just in case

who is my new egg from?

Thanks! I am happy with how the photo turned out (though not as happy as I am about the egg!). I am leaning towards the silkie - but I guess I should know in the next week or so if the eggs start getting bigger or stay small... I imagine that will be the easiest way to figure it out!

who is my new egg from?

Hi everyone, So happily today for the first time I received 3 eggs - it sure feels like spring. My Easter Egger and Speckled Sussex have been laying for awhile now - but my Silkie and BLRW (both 8 months old) have been holding out. So my question is, who did this new egg come from? My BLRW...

How do you know when they start laying??

If you're mainly feeding them layer pellets, diet shouldn't be an issue. People give their chickens treats and kitchen scraps all the time. So...? Any eggs yet?

Any brooder ideas for 9 chicks?

Glad to hear that will work for you! You can attach strips of cardboard around the base to help contain the shavings - mine still managed to make some mess, but not too bad. I think duct-taping a cut open garbage bag would work well too. Do a search of the site and you should be able to find...
