    Goose with chickens?

Thanks so much for your advice! I have a broody that I've been trying to break so maybe I'll just get a few eggs and throw under her. Thanks again!

    Goose with chickens?

Thanks again for sharing your insight and knowledge with me! When you say good ratio, are they like chickens? 1 rooster to 15 hens or is it better with pairs of 1 to 1 ratio? Also do you think it would be a good idea to get keets and raise them together with chicks?

    Goose with chickens?

I was wondering about the other person's post. Seemed a bit negative to me, but I'm new to guineas and don't want to create a poor environment for them. Do you think I could get 3 or 4 guineas and they would still be ok with 15 chickens. The other person also said that I should get at least...

    Goose with chickens?

Thanks for your reply! I asked about guineas in the guinea section. Someone there said they didn't recommend them for "watchdogs" and also said they didn't integrate that well with chickens. I think I may just get a guard dog and stick with the chickens. Thanks for your input though. I...

guinea fowl questions for a noobie

Thanks for the response! Yes, it is ft. and not inches. Didn't realize I had that backwards. Thanks for the correction. Sounds like guinea fowl isn't what I'm looking for. Even though I would still have the 4 sq ft per bird with 4 guineas and my 15-20 chickens (8x12=96/4=24) I don't think I...

guinea fowl questions for a noobie

Hello everyone, I've had chickens almost my entire life and even had a few turkeys and ducks from time to time. I currently only have chickens and I'm considering adding a few guinea fowl to my flock for some variety, and their tendency to alert everyone of predators. Mainly I have opossum...

    Goose with chickens?

Hello all, I have chickens and I've been told that putting a single goose with the chickens helps with predation since the goose will imprint on the chickens and help protect against smaller predators. I wanted to know if that was indeed true, and if so what breed of goose would be best for...

Comment by 'farmin4fun' in article 'Did You Know- Chickens'

I did see one thing that is not true 100% of the time. An egg that floats just means that it has some air inside, which does not make it bad. I've eaten many an egg that floats. Although, every egg that is bad will float 100% of the time when put in water. I think that is where this confusion...

I have a question about my two flocks free ranging together, can they?

Hey Shannara, Chickens will naturally try to establish "a pecking order" in any flock. Anyone who has ever added new chickens to an already existing flock can attest to this. It sounds like your current flock already has an established "pecking order" where Junior defers to Joe, who as...

Broody or illness? ... and bullies.

Dear OP, Sounds exactly like a broody hen to me so no need to worry. They always fluff up and cluck, avoiding other chickens even getting more aggressive and provoking fights. It's all just instinct they develop in order to help protect their babies once they hatch. If you want to break...

Unknown predator or human sending a message

Most predators such as the ones you described are active at night, and almost always eat what they catch. In fact I just lost 2 last night to what I believe is a raccoon. I'll have to take care of this problem tonight. I've often found that dogs will "play" with a chicken and kill them, not...

Comment by 'farmin4fun' in article 'Cozy Coop in Cape'

Great coop!! Might want to put some hardware cloth over the inside of the window to keep them from breaking the glass. My chickens have broken both of the windows I put in the coop by flying against them. Luckily I still have the screen in place to keep them in.

    want to solve fertilizing debate.

From my understanding his theory is quite flawed and I highly doubt all of his chickens are pure bred. I would not attempt to obtain a pure bred from him. Sounds like the chances are 50/50 at best. I do think it's wise not to pick this battle. I doubt you could convince him otherwise...

    How many?

Hey Charger, I just wanted to add a little bit about my experiences with this question. I would not attempt to add a second rooster until you have 30 hens at least. I personally would wait till I had 40. I know roosters can vary a bit with their mating frequency and aggressiveness, but I...

'Each Shall Seek His Own Kind'?

I have never noticed any of my roosters being particular about who they mate with. I had one attempt to mate with a duck. Roosters typically will mate with any hen available, sometimes even by force. If you have two roosters of different breeds you will likely end up with a few mutts so to...
