    loud egg song, no egg?

Some of my chickens keep coming in the garage or on the deck, far away from the coop, and singling loudly. I keep looking for eggs in these places and not finding any. Is this normal? Why are they doing this? Why else do hens sing? I'm still getting plenty of eggs in their nesting boxes...

    We have a possum

We had some spilled chicken food on the deck where the possum was sniffing around. It did run off when the kids and I went to the door to watch it, but it didn't run real quick like a squirrel from a dog lol. When my husband saw it, he said it was scared of him but was kind of cornered. I...

    We have a possum

I was planning on shooting it if I caught it, but I didn't know what to do after I shot it. I think I'd fear it wasn't really dead, just pretending. So the plan was (and this sounds horrible, I know) to shoot it and leave it in the cage for a while...to make sure it was dead, then dig a hole...

    We have a possum

I am worried about ticks here. We haven't had an issue yet, but friends & family just an hour south of us had a horrible tick problem last summer. I'll keep my girls locked up at night and stop worrying about the possum...but there's no way to keep it off my deck. Are they pretty smart? If I...

    We have a possum

Wow, that is all very interesting! Thank you so much for that information. I was under the impression they carried diseases and were a nuisance. We don't really have too much of an issue with raccoons here. Apparently, my neighbor works pretty hard to ensure that. I'll just continue to make...

    We have a possum

You have bursted my bubble lol. Thanks. This possum was kind of gross looking. And pretty daring. It was up by the back door in the daytime. I saw its tail first, out of the corner of my eye, and thought it was a giant rat. Ew. I should still try to trap & kill it, right? I don't want...

    We have a possum

My husband saw it the other day. While he's big on talk, he didn't kill it. I saw it yesterday. He's a pretty big guy-but I've never seen one before him so I'm not sure if he's actually big for a possum. I don't know anything about them. He looked so yucky, slow and stupid, I didn't want to...

    Normal Flock Size?

We planned on starting with about 5,and built our coop for that. When we went to buy them, they were buy 6 get 6 free. So we got 12. And had to start adding additions to the coop before we moved them out lol. 12 worked really well. It felt like too much a few times...but now I know it was...

I'm afraid to slaughter my ladies

I'm pretty sure I'd be fine eating it. However, and this is going to sound stuck up and too city girlish-I've never cooked chicken on a bone and don't know how to eat it. There, I said it. Anyway, I was going to use it all for stews & soups anyways, so I'd be taking it off the bone. But...

I'm afraid to slaughter my ladies

Really?!? That would be awesome! I didn't know people did that. We're in Mid-Michigan. Wow, that would make me feel a lot better ;)

I'm afraid to slaughter my ladies

The plan was to not get attached to my hens. They're giving me plenty of eggs, there will be no need to eat my girls anytime soon. But I'm already worried about when the time comes. I won't be letting them go on some farmland far away where a coyote will get them. I won't be feeding them...
