Thank you Dee Dee. Maybe I should consider the electric fence around the entire property. Maybe it would keep other predators away.
On legal action, I have already threatened them with that. It seems dog owners have more rights than chicken owners around here, unless I am a commercial operation...
Thanks everyone. At least someone seems to care. I have been slowly working on my pen, when the weather is warm enough. I also have picked up an electric fence charger. Maybe something will help. I have 8 free range guineas that refuse to come in at night, and three bantams that think they are...
Yup, electric fence, duh! My parents always had that around any animal pen. I had forgotten it's effectiveness. Also, am going to use hardware cloth instead of the dog wire. Or maybe I will use both.
Sigh, love my chickens, but just to start seems to cost more if I want to keep them safe.
Calling the Sheriff would only cause additional problems with the neighbors. I did what I thought was best. The dogs will never kill another of my birds, or anyone else's. They are now in the process of enriching the bottom part of my raised garden bed, covered them with lime and 3 feet of dirt.
Thanks to everyone. I am going with the outside apron and the hardware cloth around the pen. It is a slow process right now, because we are having very unusual weather for good ole Mississippi. One thing I am going to do is to go out 4 ft, because that is the height of the fencing I have. I am...
I like that apron. How far out would you suggest? I have rolls of the 4 foot tall 2"x4" holes, dog wire. Would that work? Go out four feet, plus the entire inside of the pen covered in the same dog wire? In addition to the three feet of chicken wire. It will take me a while to do it, but if it...
Chicken wire, one inch holes, covered with dog wire with 2"x4" holes. Going up three additional feet on the inside. The wire was 6' wire bent in the middle. The outside wire (also chicken wire with one inch holes) had boards nailed across the top and bottom (1x6 boards). The dogs dug under the...
As I was cleaning up the dogs and chickens, I found a hole where the dogs dug under the fence, including the three feet that covered the bottom. But too stupid to get out. The top is covered, so that is the obvious way they got in. I thought that three feet covering the bottom would be enough...
Over the past 7 months, I have raised 24 guinea keets and 24 Barred Rock chicks. A neighbor refused to keep their dogs from coming to my home (1/2 mile away). These dogs killed 19 of my guineas within a short time from when they were removed from the brooder.
Numerous complaints to the...
Thank you. As for burying the dogs, they will go into my now empty raised bed and be covered up. I am also picking up some lime to add to help them to decompose. They will at least help to fertilize the soil in my bed.
I worked hard to make my pen predator proof. I thought with my 8 acres and...
It has been a sad few days for me. Since I turned my keets out, they have been returning and responding to my call, no matter what time of the day I called. I always threw them a handful or two of feed when they did. Four days ago, some neighbors (about 1/2 of a mile away) had a visitor that...
The ones on top of the pen are my older ones. They are about a year older than the keets. I have three adults. The flock (or mob as I call them when I walk out with the feed bucket) on the ground are the keets. Some of the keets are already getting their voice. Several are already calling...
Got my 25 Barred Rock Pullet chicks yesterday (nice Halloween treat) from Ideal Hatchery. Love their specials!. They were hatched October 29, 2013. Sweet pretty babies.
