I saw this fire on the news, it was terrible. We have 8 hens and do not heat our chicken run or coop. I read that chicken feathers are very volatile and can catch fire if they touch a very hot object, such as a heat lamp. I live in Illinois (right across the river from St. Louis, MO) and we...
You have to be very careful with heat lamps. The chickens' feathers are very flammable and can catch fire if they touch the heat lamp. With the heater in the cookie tin, they can't come in direct contact with the heat source.
My husband and I made heaters for our one gallon water dispensers and for our three gallon water dispenser. It was very inexpensive and works very well. We took metal cookie tins (the kind you put cookies in), bought a lamp fixture and drilled a hole in the side of the tin, installed the...
I bought a basketball net and use a carabiner to close the top. I give my girls a variety of snacks and put them in the net (you put each loop in the carabiner and it closes the top) and hang it from the top of my chicken run. The net will hold a cabbage head and my hens just love it. I've...
Hi, you definitely want to put hardware cloth or some other fencing that has smaller holes around the chain link. I was researching guinea hens and the author had 6 of her guinea hens killed by raccoons reaching through the fence (at the time she used chicken wire for her fence) and actually...
I bought my mealworms from "Uncle Jim's Worm Farm". www.unclejimswormfarm.com The website is very informative and even has videos on how to take care of the worms.
All the chicks are using the roosts. I have 8 chicks and two roosts 45" long. One roost is a little higher than the other one and most of the time there are 4 chicks on each roost so they have plenty of room. Thanks for the info on the nesting boxes, and I'll leave them open. I've only found...
Hi, I just read an old posting and the author mentioned having her nesting boxes blocked off. My chicks are only 8 wks. old. My nesting boxes aren't blocked off. Should I block them off and if so, why? Thanks!
Hi, Where do you all buy your Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade? I've been to Home Depot, Lowes, our Farm & Home Supply Store and most of them didn't even know what it was. I've found it online and the 50 lb. bag is very reasonable but the shipping charges are more than the DE. I'm getting...
Hi. Thanks for your info. I think I'm going to try a 2 x 4 board, and a branch so the girls can have a variety. If they all tend to want to roost on the same one, we'll go with that one. With all their different personalities, the odds are part of them will prefer the 2 x 4 and the others...
We only have one roost now (we have 8 chicks - 8 wks. old) and they tend to knock one another off the roost while they are trying to perch so we definitely need a second one. If we use a 2 x 4, do you think it would help if I painted it with sanded paint so it wouldn't be slippery? Watching...
