    4 1/2 week chick help

i've also tried some infamil poly-vi-sol without iron, that seemed to give her a little boost. difficult to smear some drop on her beak and some of it shaken off onto my clothes (i smell like kids vitamins at the office). Also, i remember that putting some apple cider vinegar in their water...

    4 1/2 week chick help

I got a leghorn doing the same. She is around 3 wks old. Head bobs downward like she is constantly drowsy, eyes squinting, feathers pointed downward and lethargic when idle. When she eats, she perks up a bit but doesn't eat as robustly as the other chicks I have. I checked stool, looks normal...

Why did the chicken cross the road? Because I'm trying this again!

Week 2, we lost one of the BRs a day after this was taken.

Why did the chicken cross the road? Because I'm trying this again!

Ok, short backstory: I tried my hand at some outlaw backyard chickens a few years back. 8 birds I picked up from someone selling locally on craigslist (big mistake #1). They were a few weeks old and I kept them in a dog crate until I could get my coop built. The coop was a pretty good sized...

Hardware cloth on floor of run

two pieces of 1"X2" length of board, sandwich clamp the cut end of the cloth in between the two boards and bend downward. Sharp ends might even deter possible attempts if any intruders make it past. If made in a portable tractor, get some wire to tug upwards to get clearance for relocating tractor.

Hardware cloth on floor of run

Read somewhere that you could cut a section out from the center of the hardware cloth floor to allow access. The builder of coop said it was 6"-8" in from the edges of the coop. Not sure if that was successful or not, but plausible for scratching and dirt baths.

01/19/08 - Chicks purchased from local chicken selling type lady. What I received were supposedly 3 week old chicks, but she gave me extra: 4 BR, 2 BO, 2 RIR, one brown silkie and one silkie frizzle mix. The last two were older than the others. My original cardboard box would not suffice when I...

How am I supposed to change the strictest chicken law???

I am also in a HOA that is anti-chicken. It didn't help when I attempted a coop with some mis-sexed birds. (Yes, roosters crow ALL DAY...) However, I am thinking, I am right next to a high school, and I will check if this school has a 4-H Club. My son is in elementary, but maybe I could do some...

    Ventilation question

since I live in a non chicken friendly HOA, I would leave its appearance and place dog dishes and a chew toy near it... Planning on trying my hand again for some covert coop action.

When would be a good time....

I've never purchased shavings, but I am collecting some from my wood planer. Do these have to be large curls or some consistent size? Does anyone see any consistency from hatcheries or breeds that confuse their bedding as food? I think I will be getting some next week from a local feed store...

Switching to pine shavings in brooder, so how thick?

Oh geez, I am waiting on a handful of chicks to arrive locally at the feed stores here and was thinking of using my shavings I've collected from my planer. It's all SYP so I know it's good to go...but the thought of them eating that stuff is changing my mind!!! You say 3 weekers are eating...
