    Young chickens laying sporadically

I just wanted to get opinions on this - My four girls started laying 12 days ago at about 20 weeks old. They all laid on that day (!) and then stopped for two days. Since then there has only been one egg per day and I have an idea which chicken it is but not 100% sure. And then today there...

Please tell me gender and breed!

These are photos of my six week old chicks. I'd love it if someone could take a guess at their breed and/or gender. There are four - a white one, a black one, a brown one and a tan one. Thanks!

    Cage protection - need advice!

Thanks! My main concerns would be foxes and cats. Possibly snakes and rodents but I'm not sure. It might be too cold for snakes at the moment. I don't know what any of those things are, would the hardware store know?

    Cage protection - need advice!

I'm about to put my six week old chicks out on the verandah in their cage. The cage is made of wood and wire and is totally enclosed, but doesn't have wire on the floor. If I'm putting it on a wooden verandah, not on grass, should I buy some hardware cloth to attach to the bottom of the cage as...

Putting my chicks outside in winter

Thanks for all of your help lilpetunia. I managed to get a good cheap coop from Bunnings that'll be fine for several weeks on the verandah as long as they have a heat lamp. And thanks Stiggy :)

Putting my chicks outside in winter

The man at the farm where I got them said eight weeks should be fine, so I'm hoping that's correct. I have four chickens and the only place outside I could put them is the verandah. I had a look online but can't find any small, basic chicken runs I could get to put on the verandah. The only good...

Putting my chicks outside in winter

Thanks for your advice! But how do I tell when they're fully feathered? I'm in Melbourne as well. It's freezing! Unfortunately I don't have a garage for them. They're in the bathroom at the moment but I'm not sure how much longer that will work.

Putting my chicks outside in winter

My chicks are currently 2 and a half weeks old. I want to put them outside in their coop in a few weeks and wanted some advice on exactly when I should. It's winter in Australia and it can get down to 32 degrees fahrenheit at night and is in the 50s during the day. At what age can I put them...

    Are my chicks warm enough?

My five day old chicks have a 60 watt bulb over them in one corner of their brooder. They seem to spend a lot of time cuddling under it and I'm just concerned they may be too cold. They do move around their brooder regularly and are happy to go over to their food and water which are at the other...

When can baby chicks go outside

I'd also like to know when my chicks can go and live outside. It's coming into winter where I live and can get down to 30 degrees fahrenheit overnight and up to 60 degrees during the day. How old would they need to be to live in their coop without a heat lamp? Thanks
