    Are your roosts equal heights?

Yeah,I know,....I just thought they might benefit. For awhile I had bandaged their feet and also got them chicken booties to hold the wound dressings in place. It was obvious they had a harder time holding on to the roost. Now they are healed and fine. They were adopted birds so may have had the...

    Are your roosts equal heights?

I switched From two by twos to two by fours wide side up because some of the older hens were getting bumblefoot. I have 15 hens of various ages. The buff Orpington prefers the floor maybe because she is too fat. The smaller breeds like Norwegian jerhon and Sicilian buttercup love to fly up high...

    Two coops, one run?

I must add that it is a pain in the neck having two coops to close up at night and open in the morning. But they are each built like Fort Knox totally wrapped with hardware cloth. We have many predators in our area. I am working on an idea for a passage between the coops so I need to only open...

    Two coops, one run?

I have two coops with one run. I started that way cause the coops were free. There are Five one year old hens in one coop and five two year olds in the other. They are all together in the runs and seem to get along fine if not overcrowded. The first five came from a friend who could no longer...

I made this portable run out of PVC pipe. Because I got complaints from my family about the junky looking chicken pen stuff I had put together I decided to make this blend in by painting it green with a spray paint meant for plastic. I added wheels recently. They swing under as the pen is lifted.

    Switching to deep litter

Thank you for your advice! Last night I left the hens to their own devices and only one, an australorp, joined the older hens. So I will do that again until I see a pattern. I wish I didn’t have to lock the pop doors up at night. It would be easier to leave both coops pop doors open into their...

    Switching to deep litter

Oh darn I put all my photos in the Gallery section. You can see both hen houses and the make do system I have for the time being. Sorry it may take me awhile to get the hang of this.

Young hen house built onto my old raised garden bed. I used the hoops to support 1/4 inch hardware cloth. Floor is also lined with hardware cloth. Cheap flimsy free house is now beefed up with recycled suntuf roofing and leftover paint.
