Our adventure began with a Easter Chick gift from my Mother to my 10 year old daughter. We added a few chicks so we would have a variety. I found some plans on the internet, got materials on Monday and by Friday, she and I had built the coop and run. After a few weeks of letting them free range...

    Ocd?

I have 12 nesting boxes for 7 hens, but four of them always use the same one. I guess they like it enough to wait their turn! Chickens really are funny people.

How much did YOUR first egg cost?

My daughter says it was about$ 3000.00. I'm trying not to keep count, but the family time is priceless!

    first 2 eggs!!

Our eggs seem to be getting larger, with an occassional double-yoke. I'm new to this, but I do hope they will lay bigger eggs after they mature a little more. Anyone else have some input on the size increase?

How many eggs are in your fridge?

Only 4 of my 7 girls are laying, so they are doing good to keep production up to demands. We were down to 1 a few days ago, but now have almost a dozen. Time for breakfast for dinner! (a family tradition and now a regular occurance)

Coops in the sauna of Houston questions

Thanks for this question. It has been a rough summer here in mid-GA and it's still getting into the 90's during the day. I haven't had any problems yet, but now I'm thinking about adding a small fan for ventilation. I agree with the others that shade is the most important factor.
