Broody Hen won't use her right leg

I did lift her up and got a protest-puffing of feathers. I quickly cleaned where she was and then put her back. She has food and water where she can reach it while sitting on her eggs. She just keeps that leg extended and won't stand on it :-( She quit laying when she decided to brood. She...

Broody Hen won't use her right leg

I have a 10 month old Buff Orpinger that decided to go broody and sit on some eggs. I didn't know how to break her of her need to sit on eggs, so I put a few fertile ones under her. She has been sitting in her nest for about a week, and other than her getting all puffed up when I put food and...

How Long do you wait after the hatching date to dispose of the eggs?

I did the water test on a few and according to that they should still be viable. I didn't want to disturb them any more than needed. I candled 2 and they looked fine. I'm hoping they are just late bloomers. Not doing the pinhole because I'm sure it would be to their demise.

Hatch-Along - Setting eggs week of Feb 4th..anyone else?

I set 41 over three weeks ago and only one hatched. They were "due" on Wednesday and one hatched on Friday and nothing else...yet. From the ones I could candle, all but 3 were developing. The others are too dark; brown and green to see anything. Not sure how long to wait....

How Long do you wait after the hatching date to dispose of the eggs?

Wanting to start a feed co-op in Tucson, Arizona

I'm in NW Tucson but I'm just getting started again. I hope to have about a dozen layers-we'll see. I have an incubator full and they hatch next week and I won't know for awhile what I have. I already have buyers for the chicks! I'm more of the back yard size for personal use. I would be...

    Hello from the Southwest

Wow, thank you all for the warm welcome. I just read my original post...I meant couldn't be happier!! I have been wanting chickens again for a long time.

i was given two chickens because one was too vocal for her neighborhood.

Thanks, that is exactly what happened. They both laid eggs today and now they're quiet!! The one that is especially vocal is also on the mean side. I may put her by herself before she becomes dinner!

OMG she is a loud and persistent youngster. Is there a way to quell her constant squawking? She may become dinner before she starts laying, (7 months old).
