Hey Grandpa, What's for Supper? Part 2

I have back ribs in the smoker, fresh potatoes and peas out of the garden, cowboy beans (requested by #3 son who's coming for dinner), and, because I just returned from Haiti, we are having Haitian Rice and Beans (which, by the looks of the batch-size, will feed me lunch all week.....or 2). Life...

Any advice on why my 18 week old roos tasted...rubbery

After the birds are processed they are generally rested in the refrigerator for about 3 days to let the rigor mortis dissipate. Place in a ziplock bag and refrigerate until the legs and wings feel very "loose". Some people brine during this time. Hope your next ones are better!

I'm sorry, I don't know where to turn...

I would also look on Craig's List or Ebay for some of your missing items. A lot of times these thieves try to sell what they've stolen. I am so sorry this happened to you. It's the last thing a guy needs on top of the health issues you're dealing with. And, thank you, sir, for your service to...

    dust bath

I got a 50 lb. bag of masonry sand ($2.00) at Menards and mixed it with a little DE in an old 9 x 13 cake pan. They love it! My girls are 11 weeks old and sometimes there are 4 of them in the pan trying to dust bathe at the same time. They're penned in my garage while my coop is being built...

Hoover Hatchery out of Iowa gets an A+, too. They were 12 for 12 on my pullets!

    Capillaria worms? Help!

Use Valbazen liquid cattle/goat/sheep dewormer. Give 1/2cc undiluted by mouth per standard-sized bird. Repeat dosage in 10 days. Do not eat eggs from these birds for 14 days after last dose. I found mine at a fleet supply store. Good luck and happy chickening!

New chicks, damaged box, not sure how to dose them

1/2 teaspoon per gallon of water for the powdered kind or 2 teaspoons per gallon of water for the liquid kind. Don't put anything else in their water . No ACV, no electrolytes. Give them the Corid for 5 days making a fresh batch every 24 hours. After 5 days, give them electrolytes with vitamins...

    chicken problems

Cornish meaties are prone to legs problems as they get close to butchering time. Their legs can't support their weight, especially if they are big birds. They are also prone to Congestive Heart Failure at the later stages of their life. Have you weighed them or do you have an idea of an average...
