Any idea what breeds of chicks might be available at these two swaps/meets? DH finished the coop and I'd like to purchase chicks locally if possible. :)
I seem to have preferences for speckled sussex, (golden laced) wyandottes, australorps, easter eggers, barred rocks and/or buckeyes- but for...
Do we have any wyandotte breeders in Alachua county or nearby? DH is nearly done with the coop and I'm trying to see what prices are locally (if I can afford to buy local chickens, I would like that very much) and would like my flock to be a mix of araucana/EEs, wyandottes, and speckled sussex...
I realize I'm resurrecting an older thread here, but this whole cedar vs pine thing really gets to me, and the quoted question is just perfect. If cedar is harmful, it is impossible to believe that pine is safer than cedar. I'll reference a post I made previously here...
Here's a woman who rescues, rehabs, and loves all thing fowl.
My favourite part is her idea about what calling someone a "chicken" means in her eyes.
Enjoy! I searched the forum to see if this was already posted somewhere, but could not find anything. So here it is if you love hearing...
Thank you for sponsoring BackyardChickens. :)
For chickens to produce at the level we have come to expect from today's egg layers, they certainly do need more than just what they find in the backyard. It is nice to see another option and learn about your feed. Thank you for the info.
Gainesville now, in Alachua county. :)
... wish I HAD thought of putting a feed/farm store on my bridal registries... brilliant! My husband laughed at that. Before me he had no pets. ^_~ Now he gets up in the morning and feeds my birds and my dog then cooks breakfast and makes me get up and...
MPC was where I got my seven hens, as at the time it was the cheapest for small orders. All were healthy, well-packed, and all turned out to be female. The barred rock turned out on the small side (I suspect she's a bantam though I had ordered a standard) but other than that I had no problems...
Greetings from St. Petersburg. :)
I will be re-homing myself to Gainesville next week (getting married this Saturday) but my chickens are staying behind. My father fell in love with them and says I have to get new ones for myself!
To date we have seven chickens all laying well: 1 black...
Mah Peeps
The chickens were ordered Feb 3, 2011 from My Pet Chicken (after researching reviews here and the breeds I wanted, this site seemed the best choice) and set to arrive on the week of June 13 that year. They were indeed hatched on June 13 and arrived the very next day. All were...
All seven of mine from MPC arrived also in June '11. Never had a pasty butt or any problems. My barred rock seems to be on the small side (almost the same size as the silkie), that would be my only complaint. The rest are huge, hearty critters.
Yep, leave them somewhere to get to if they're too warm. They'll self-regulate. If they're cold they'll be cuddling under the light (which might mean it needs to be lowered and warmer) and if they're hot they'll be spread out as far as they can get.
Even with little parrot babies who couldn't...

Not sure but it should be one of three: welsummer, easter egger, or speckled sussex. I'm not familiar enough with the chicks of each to tell the difference.
We DO have a silkie though. In that top pic it's the black one on the left. My understanding is silkies have an extra toe on each...
There was a switch at the postoffice, my chickens went home with someone else! But all is well and they got to me all safe and sound on Tuesday. I ordered them from My Pet Chicken and am very happy with my healthy little chicks. None have had pasty butt at all and have plenty of space to run...
