do you stay with your flock while free ranging?

My flock of 23 get to run around all day as long as I am home in time to shut the pen door at dusk. They are the happiest when they can run around our couple of acres. My theory is it is their job to keep themselves safe during the day (within reason of course), and my job to keep them safe at...

Two 2 week old chicks with leg trouble pics

I would try taping the leg forward or something before euth, just to see if you could maybe retrain the legs. Maybe the cup trick for spradle leg would work.

Help...need to find a home for my packing peanuts!!! :)

They are probably leghorn roosters, they are a surplus that they often use for packing peanuts. Chicken rescues tend to be over run with roosters and may or may not be able to take them. They readily take hens. good luck!

How To Humanely Euthanize A Chicken..

NEVER freeze a bird to kill it. Chickens can survive in freezing temps. Use carbon monoxide if you can't snap the neck or use a hatchet. See above for some very humane methods involving car exhaust and hoses etc. I work in animal control and could never reccommend freezing. In fact we could...

    Dirt floor vs. wood floor

I have a wood floored shed that we put plywood over the top to protect the actual floor. 6 inches of shavings/straw mix keeps the floor itself pretty clean and dry. No need to scoop it out other than a couple of times a year. I turn it over with a rake once in a while. All of this has been...

    Phlegmy sounding cluck and crow

My Wyandotte roo and my Penedesinca hen (2 out of 10 chickens) both have a phlegmy wet rattly sound - the roo only when he crows, and the hen will emit a hiccup/cluck/cough sound that sounds very wet. They do not have a sound breathing, that sounds normal/silent. Any thougts? They seem happy and...

    WHAT WILL FIX PASTY BUTT???

Probiotics... I have also heard that plain yogert works to get their little guts functioning properly. May be old school, but my chicken-smart friend said he never has a problem with pasty butt in ground raised chicks with hens, so he started putting a scoop of DIRT in with the chicks and said...

When to feed pullets Layer Feed?

I had a very thin shelled egg today, and only my oldest pullet has started laying (6 months). I have young pullets too, they are all together. I offer calcium, but can I feed layer to 3 -4 month old pullets?

    thin egg shells

Barb's Organic Garden : They also get kitchen scraps and their own egg shells back. . This is an old thread that I searched, but doesn't giving their eggshells encourage eating their eggs? This posted had a problem with them eating eggs.
