Part of my concern with putting the eggs under the broodies is where they're at. They're each in nest boxes that are fairly high up off of the ground. I'm concerned about them hatching chicks out up there and having them fall out. Is it better to move them all together once the eggs hatch...
Thanks all for the responses. We've decided to quit fighting with the broodies.
We have the eggs going in the incubator. I'm wondering if we might be successful with moving the hens and eggs together when they begin to pip so that we can let them raise the chicks instead of having to brood...
Have a Buff Orpington and a Barnavelder who have both decided to go broody. We would like to be able to move them out of the Main coop to a smaller uninhabited coop. Have tried to move them twice and they refused to get on their nests. We have some eggs in the incubator that we would love to...
A bit of an update on this issue. I believe that the shell less egg layer is our Barred Rock. We've never seen her in a nest box for more than a few seconds at a time, and the shell less egg has always been outside of the nest boxes.
Elinor is the Barred Rock and was the first to begin...
Thank you all for the nice welcome and answers/suggestions,
Yes, I meant Red Combs, sorry. :)
We got the first egg back on July 3rd. Then it was about a week before we got the next one, etc. I have not seen them intentionally eating the oyster shells, so have gone to the point of just...
7 pullets, 6 of them about 23 weeks old. 5 have red crops and wattles and squat. (2 RIR, 1 Barred Rock, 1 Barnevelder, 1 EE) We've been getting 1-3 eggs/day of various sizes lately.
I understand that it can take the girls time to get the workings in order, but we've been getting an occasional...
We have a RiR that's about the same age when she first started laying. Got a single small egg, then nothing for about a week, then another single egg. Then found a couple of shell-less eggs. Now have 3 girls that are acting like they're laying....red combs, squatting, egg songs, and...
I just hard boiled a couple of store bought eggs, and put one in each of the Nest Boxes for a couple of weeks. Seems to have worked, and have been able to dispose of them now that the girls are laying in the right spots.
We have 7 girls, just starting into laying. Have 4 that I think are...
Just read this thread. First thing that comes to mind is to suggest that he have his friends come over and help him to build a coop/pen for his chickens. It is his responsibility to contain his animals, not yours. While it may be difficult to be too forceful with him, it may be in the...
