Besides molting, they say they need at least 12 to 14 hours of light - could this be the problem for some of you? I know here in Michigan it's getting dark at my house at 7:30PM ish...Sun doesn't come up till 7:45 ish AM I have a light with a timer in the coop that doesn't shut off till 8:30
Thanks for your replies, I guess I'll wait and watch and see what happens. Now that some of them are laying I wouldn't want to do anything to stop progress
Last week I went and bought a different brand of layer mash(it was on sale). Some of them also started laying eggs last week - woohoo! They just don't seem to eat as much of it as the previous brand I purchased...any ideas? I'm new to chickens, just want to make sure my girls are getting what...
I am unable to post pics due to a missing chord that goes from the camera to the computer but.....I got my very first egg last night from my Austrolorp girls, they'll be 22 weeks old tomorrow - YAY!

Hi Everyone! I'm from Charlevoix, MI and have 6 BA's that are now 18 weeks old today! Hoping for eggs soon! I have a 40' X 60' garden (which I enjoy very much) along with hanging out in my lawn chair inside my chicken run - nothing more relaxing - my friends all think I have lost my mind...
I've been having a little trouble with all the traffic on the way home from work lately....drives me bonkers! Oh and tell your roommate to go buy her own darn food.
I'm a newbie, but my understanding is the oyster shells DO NOT take the place of grit. Oyster shells are only provided to assist in egg production. Does that make sense???
