When our young chickens were chicks, we had a raccoon climbing over fence, it got a lot of them eventually (a whole other story). The survivors learned to roost in the trees inside the chicken pen to stay safe. Now I have had a hard time getting the young chickens into the coop at night. There...
we have 10 week old chicks that refuse to go into coop at night. we have older chickens that already sleep in the coop. the chicks roost outside in trees next to coop. I tried moving chicks into coop and they were all panicked as if I was holding them hostage. they ran out as fast as they could...
My mother hen has been taking care of 5 chicks and 1 more has hatched (we put the remainder of the eggs that didn't hatch by the time momma hen left the best under a heat lamp). We put the new chick in with momma and 5 chicks and momma just pecks it, will not accept it. We still have 4 eggs to...
I massaged her lower abdomen for a few min
utes to help with constipation. It worked. She pooped what seemed like rocks. Best guess is she was bound up from sitting for three weeks to hatch.. Hopefully she recovers ok. Would be a shame for a mom who went through that to not enjoy get babies...
I have a hen, who just hatched 5 chicks. But now as she got off the nest she is bleeding from her vent. She is taking care of the chicks and eating and drinking herself. Her droppings are runny but as I said she has just gotten off the nest so she wasn't eating much if at all while on the eggs...
Do eggs always hatch on day 21, or do they sometimes hatch on day 20? I have a hen on day 19 right now....just wondering if her heat is hotter/better than an incubators?
One of my hens has a 2x2 inch wound under her wing. It is very hard to get neosporin salve in it. Can I use an antiseptic spray/pump instead? I have noticed a couple of my other hens pecking at the salve also. I know there is blue kote but that says not to use on animals intended for food.
I would also like to know about hens getting over mated. We have 11 hens and 3 roosters. The roosters don't fight but they try to stop the rooster that is mating, trying to get in between mating chickens to get him to stop, then THAT rooster tries to mate with the same hen.
Is that too much...
One of our hens has a mystery wound under her wing. Don't know what happened to her. Could it be from mating? We have 3 roosters. I out salve on it a couple times. I have seen her peck at it, I assume she is able to clean it. She isn't very cooperative, even to out on it. I am impressed you can...
We ran an outdoor extension cord to the coop, until we get the electricity hooked up. Then of course we have the water heater to out under the waterer. They are both the metal type. An outdoor cord will save tons of time!
