My dachshund just proved she can never be trusted around the girls

I believe it! Mini dachshunds were bred for their strong instincts. I have 2 I breed, the female I have trained to herd the chickens if they get out of their fencing, however my male is trained to dig moles out of the ground and chase off foxes. I have to watch him like a hawk around my...

    Emergency, Ticks On Goose

We use vinegar to remove ticks from our dog. It works great, pour it on, and after a few minutes the tick is gone. We have bush so an average of 1/2 dozen ticks per year we remove from the dog with vinegar. I don't think it would hurt your goose to try.

    yolk color

Fresh Fresh Fresh! We know it is time to start supplementing with alfalfa and other things when the grass starts to die for winter, so does the vibrant colour in the egg yolks.

You might be a redneck if...

...your planning a future honey moon and the location all depends on where the fertile eggs you can't get are. hmmm, honey, if we go here we can always make a quick stop to pick up some of these eggs.

    Polish identity crisis

So I bought 4 polish, 3 pullets from person A and a cockrel from person B. All are 14-16 weeks old. So the cockrel is very ovious, as he has red waddles, and 2 pullets are for sure. But there is one pullet who I am unsure if may be a male. It is the middle one. The head feathers look like the...

    How big a run?

8 by 8 should be big enough, but bigger is always better in terms of chickens. The more space, the easier it is to keep clean, for new vegetation to grow, more air circulation which keeps down sickness.

What do you do with the guts after you process?

We eat every organ we can, and the feet are either cooked up(amazing flavour to the stew) or I sell to a select few who pay quite the pretty penny for them. Anything I can not eat goes to the pigs.

Fox attack - Big hit today

We were having fox issues this spring. I lost 13 hens this spring, the fox started coming after I let them out in the morning, which is at 5:30 am. I caught 3 foxes since, in the live trap, and my dog has killed 2. In the live trap I put chicken organs one day, a chunk of salmon bones the...

What do you think of my pictures?

My favorite is the 3rd pic, I like how the light is hitting the blossom, and how the main leaves are faded in the background, while one leaf(left side) pokes to the foreground and you can see the detail.

Ever bought a chicken from a garage sale?

Haha, I have absolutely bought a chicken from a yard sale. bought a few actually. My favorite was a silkie mutt who would sit on anything. She wasn't even for sale, just saw her wandering around the yard beside the sale, and I'm the crazy lady who asked if that chicken is for sale.

    how to break egg eaters

I broke 2 egg eaters by leaving golf balls in all the nests. Seemed to work for me, I guess they got tired of trying to peck out which egg was real. I also went to see if there was eggs as often as I could till I knew the habit was done. I also found that egg eaters in my personal experiences...

    Integration - older into younger

I agree with getting an older rooster. When ever I have new adolecent chicks to integrate into the laying coop (so yearly), I integrate them with one of my vetran roosters who is more adjusted to changes. I have one australrop 3 year old roo who I have 2 days ago put in with my 10 week old...
