Yes, nice coop! Looks a bit like mine. I put a bale of straw down for winter and the chickens enjoy scratching around in it, making cozy nests during the day when it is too snowy to roam around outside. I clean up droppings every couple of days and it just seems way nicer for them than sitting...
Thank you everyone for the replies! They have done really well on the 18% so I may just go back to that. But I feel reassured that 22% for a few weeks won't kill them either since most are molting.
Hi,
My local IFA is selling chicken feed crumble that it advertises as 22% for "Winter." But some other threads say that is only for game birds. Is 22% too high? Bad for my chickens? Thanks for feedback!
My 32-wk old EE seems to have injured her right foot. I bathed her in epsom salts today and cleaned her off. She is not egg bound--laid a nice green egg this morning; no bumble foot that I could discern; eyes are bright and she will eat. But she clearly limps and sat most of the time today out...
My EE just started limping today at 32 wks. Laying fine. Not a problem. Gave her an epsom salt bath (which she didn't like). Doesn't look like bumble foot either. Alert..will eat though I think she may have a little diarrhea, but not sure on that. She can fly just fine...not unsteady...
Thank you so much to all who have replied. I am reassured!! I have a Buff Orpington, Australorp, Easter Egger, one Golden and one Silver Wyandotte. They seemed fine this morning (25 degrees through most of the day) and ran around the yard. The coop is a "garden coop" style with a clear roof...
Hi,
This is my first winter as a chicken owner so I need some reassurance! My question is: how cold is too cold for chickens? Nights here in Salt Lake City have already dipped down to 30. My coop (although insulated) doesn't seem to stay much warmer than it is outside (I check the...
Thank you for your very helpful reply. I t sounds like the way to proceed would be 1. fecal test 2. Worm according to results.
Question: should I worm before they start laying or late fall before the snow starts? And how long before you can resume eating eggs? Also, should you worm after...
Hi,
I have 6 pullets (all 11 weeks old). They free-range in my urban backyard during the day. Recently, I was reading about the dangers of worms--especially gapeworm.
I am confused about worming--if I should start now or wait until the Fall. Some people say have fecal samples tested to...
Hi,
I have six 9 wk chickens. They free range in my urban back yard all day and make it back into the coop/run around dusk so that is not a problem. I have a very secure, walk-in run that has a perching branch. The chickens have been going to sleep on that as opposed to the coop. The coop is...
For what it's worth, go with the Australorp. I love my Australorp. The sweetest thing from the very start. Very friendly. A real lap chicken. Good layers and not aggressive with the other hens.
