Hens not eating layer feed, killing 4-5 week old chicks

I actually just found that the killing has been being done by my rooster. He has been in a stall so he won't be able to fertilize eggs, but he can poke his head out through the bottom. Apparently he had pulled some babies through the opening on the bottom. The baby I found on the floor was...

Hens not eating layer feed, killing 4-5 week old chicks

Please help me! I am not surewhat is going on with my hens. They are refusing to eat their layer feed and now they are killing my 4-5 week old chicks! When they are out during the day they will eat scratch grain and BOSS, but they aren't touching the layer feed. I have lost 3 chicks so far...

Why TSC is really the devil in disguise

Quote: I completely relate to everything you said(except for the hubby part)! my family started off last year with no intentions of having mre than our initial 14(12 hens{supposed to be 13} and 2 roos{supposed to be 1}). In November we found out that our roos were doing their job of...

I think TSC pulled a fast one on me.

Quote: Interesting... but easy to tell right off it is a California White or a regular white leghorn! The black dot/dots on the body is a dead give away for the California White.

I think TSC pulled a fast one on me.

Quote: Wing sexing only works on birds that are specifically bred for it. ost breeds are not. Not sure one way or the other about leghorns. I have heard this argument before... and I must say that I have found it to be an incorrect one. I have MANY different breeds(SLW, GLW, BLRW, BG, BA...

I think TSC pulled a fast one on me.

aside from comb size difference and leg thickness(cockerels have thicker legs and feet than pullets) you can sex them by checking their wing feathers. cockerels will only have 1 layer where pullets will haqve a double layer of feathers on their wings.. also, cockerels are slower to feather out...

Got the call, going to pick up!!! ^_^

Woke up to find one of the Silver Grey Dorkings and one of the Creveceour dead. Contacted McMurray Hatchery and they credited the amount for each chick plus their vaccinations back onto the credit card. Knew that TSC had chicks, so went down and discovered that all the remaining chicks were...

Got the call, going to pick up!!! ^_^

little lakenvelder chick died at 10:15 pm on March 14, 2011. at 12 m the little gold chick died. I was worried for both of these chicks when I first opened the box, just because of how small they were compared to any of the others. Praying I don't lose one of the creveceour chicks while I am...

    Ameraucana, Araucana, Easter Egger? Confused.

The info on the faq that someone posted early on is incorrect about their ear lobes. their ear lobes should infact be white. Red ear lobes tell you that the hen will lay light pink to medium brown eggs. EEs are hens that conform to neither the Aracauna or the Ameraucana breed standards. However...

Got the call, going to pick up!!! ^_^

Update: The chick pictured below is on it's last legs. I have tried everything I can to bring it back around. nothing is working. Looks like I will be calling McMurray first thing in the morning to ask for a replacement pullet. Hopefully they will be able to add it to a local feed store's order.

New chicks - Breed identification needed

#2 - potentially lakenvelder chick: has been getting progressively weaker... no matter what I try to do. Giving it water & yolk by dropper isn't working. I think I will be making a call to McMurray tomorrow to inform them of it's untimely passing and requesting a replacement to be sent along...

New chicks - Breed identification needed

Quote: So far they are doing great! just make sure to have water ready and waiting for them. The trip dehydrates them quite a bit.

Calling favorelle lovers- do I have a boy and a girl~ crossing fingers

You have a beautiful pair! the differences are: Pullet: - double layer of feathers on the wings - skinny legs & feet - faster to push out feathers -develops shoulder feathers long before the cockerel Cockerel: - single layer of feathers on the wings - thick legs & feet - slow to feather out. -...

New chicks - Breed identification needed

I just discovered that 1) is a bantam Silver Duckwing Old English Game.... It wasn't mentioned in the list for the rarest of rare... so I am assuming that it and it's twin are my 2 packing peanuts... time will tell though...
