The "official" SquareFootGardenning Mel's Mix is 1/3 peat (For fraibility) 1/3 multi-source compost (for nutrition) and 1/3 vermiculite (for moisture retention.) I've had very good results with this mix in both beds and as a container mix. That said, it's not totally ncessary, merely an...

Congrats on the truck! The wife and I were thinking of one for similar reasons, but we're leaning towards teh minivan route right now. Do yourself a favor with the run... If you're not going to double them up, skip the 1x3 and go for 2x3. 1x3 warps at the drop of a hat, and your frame will...

Sorry I'm late with this one. With roasts, I put the onions in bottom under the roast. I only add a little broth; a good roast will be b juicy on its own. Then I stack veggies ON TOP of the roast, trying to keep them out of the broth. You have to salt them separately but they slow roast and...

OH! Sorry! Took that for granted. Wire fence of any sort is a complete pain to work with solo.

What are you using to build the run? I've had almost no luck with chicken wire on T-posts and U-posts. When stapled to a rigid wooden frame however, it's pretty simple to work with.

Flour is processed. The question is, has it been adulterated with chemicals? It's possible to get flour that contains nothing but... ...wait for it... ...wheat. :-) Unenriched wheat would be your best bet. Or if you have access to a suitable grinder, make it yourself and don't worry...

I've done 12s. And the 2 job thing. IT can be done. :-) Once-a-week cooking and a decent supply of tupperware, icepacks and a cooler make this much easier. Think one-pot meals, slow cooker, crudites, fruits, and simple grains. It can be done, and you can do it! You'll show em.

I bet you could do it. What you wouldn't be able to buy is processed foods. If you're the type who cooks meals, it shouldn't be that much of a challenge so long as you're careful about your sources. Of course a garden is ideal, but given the recent popularity of "Organic" produce and meats...

So now I have TWO broodies. It seems that Tiny has picked up on Olive's queues and is sitting on eggs. And the rest of our girls are more than happy to deposit them for her. She's even taken it to a whole new level and plucked her chest mostly bare. I've read that broodieness is contagious...

ACK! Condolences on your loss. Can the birds be replaced? And do you have any idea what kinda predator it is? We've curtailed unsupervised free-ranging around these parts till I can fill the fox with holes or water... Our Garden fence here is made with nice sturdy 10 foot t-posts, and...

My tomatoes were doing very well when they were stuck in pots. They're not doing as well transplanted. Supersweet 100 Hybrid is going yellow and wilting, and the rest are suffering from some serious transplant shock. About the only ones doing well are the Patio Princess container hybrids, and...

HMM! Hadn't thought of that. Would certainly make spacing a little more formal. (I like formal, she does not...) Was great to meet you yesterday, thanks for the sage and mint! The good news? Those beautiful eggs are successfully under our broody. The bad news? She ate the olive one...
