  3. The shutters and flower box built by our 18 year old son. What a great kid!! :) Now, as a purely vain side note....the window is too high. It's functional and all but it's actually quite ugly at that height. Though I'm not about to tell my hubby that, because he will move it and I am the one who told him that I wanted it "as high as possible" before I went in to make dinner. By the time I came back outside (less than an hour) it was DONE, including the siding.... The thing is, it opens/tilts out and I wanted to make every possible precaution that anything that might want to climb in would have as much difficulty as possible. Then after I thought about it, there is no way I'd be leaving that window open at night when predators are a risk, so having it all the way at the top probably wasn't necessary. The last thing I have to say about this "situation" is that the window is securely and squarely in place, it will be a good source of sunlight, fresh air and ventilation. So I'll get over it. That I even have worried about such a trivial thing makes me roll my eyes at myself. Puuuleease!! Though I do wonder if some sort of cute striped awning would help it.....for purely functionality and comfort of the chickens, of course. You know, just in case the sun shines too brightly in that window..... ;)

  5. The siding is going up, there on the side is a vent with metal mesh. We might have to install some sort of shutter to be able to close it up in the winter to help keep the heat in, we'll see.

  6. Here is the coop from the front side. You can see the rear wall and window is up, the siding on the left wall is up and the framework for an interior wall is up. All of this while I was inside making dinner! What we will have in the first section beyond the main door is a 3' x 8' storage area, then a second door leading to the 5' x 8' coop.

  11. And the frames are UP! Yay! All of this took just under 40 minutes for 2 of us. And probably only that long because one of us had never used a big ole' power framing nail gun and at one point that individual loaded the nails in upside down causing quite a jam in the gun and a delay of a few minutes to get things moving in the right direction. We don't need to say which one of us that was. That little detail is irrelevant.

The truss/frame is attached to the floor, to the first row of studs, and soon will also be attached to the siding and roofing, so the spacers aren't actually structural. They are there to help block unwanted critters, the wind and to keep things straight as we went along. Part of the reason we got these frames for such a score was that they were slightly off square and nailing those spacers helped us square things up.

  14. Pictured here are the shed trusses/frames that we are using as the framework for our coop. They had been sitting out in the elements for a long time in the back lot of a local lumberyard. Although they are technically "new" they were aged, very weathered and slightly off square so we were able to buy them for a super good deal. When this deal came up for these trusses, we made to decision to build our coop 8' x 8' square. These trusses are 8' wide, studs are 8', and the OSB is 4' x 8' per sheet. Doing it this way there is just alot less wood to cut, and also less wasted lumber. To be honest, I like the appearance of other coops and have dozens of really amazing and adorable ones "pinned", but who cares what I have "pinned" on Pinterest, or stuck to my fridge with a magnet if nothing actually gets built. I think it'll still be pretty cute in the end, but more importantly it will be safe, structurally solid and.....done.

  15. This is the beginning of our coop. We have no plans, but we have a fair bit of building experience, knowledge and common sense. We'll see how it goes! :) The studs that are directly on the ground are treated to prevent rotting, but nothing else is treated lumber. You can see the beginning framework, topped with a sheet of OSB lumber, the second sheet will be attached next....
