Hear me out, I know this sounds crazy. I have NEVER seen mealworms on my farm. A few years ago I bout a small bag of dried mealworms from Blue Seal (commercial, not home made). I fed some to the ladies, put them on a shelf, then forgot about them.
Last year, or maybe this spring, I...
Since this is my first hatch as well, and I don’t understand the terminology, are you saying from the first external tiny hole? I noticed 2 of my eggs had a tiny hole at 1pm. 7 hours later it hasn’t gotten any bigger. Are you saying that if the chick isn’t completely out by 1pm tomorrow...
Thank you! In our limited experience, hens raised by their mothers are better socially than those raised in a brooder and later introduced. Moreso with roosters.
It's time to start adding to our flock and our hens aren't very good brooders. We have one that sits on eggs, but last year she only hatched one rooster. If we incubate and hatch eggs, is it feasible to give them to the broody mama after they hatch or is that a recipe for disaster?
I just got home from Blue Seal and realized they loaded up Extra Egg instead of the Multi-Flock I normally feed my Cornish X broilers. They're 5 weeks, is this going to be an issue if I feed them this, or should I load it all back up and trade it in?
I know they make battery powered LED lights with motion sensors. I know they make battery powered timer lights. However, do they make any battery powered LED programmable lights? I don't have electricity in my coop and I'd like to add a laying light. I would like a battery powered LED light...
Are there any White Dorking breeders left? I've reached out to some in this thread and others found in this thread. I have had no luck with any that will have spring chicks.
I have nesting boxes with small roosts attached to the front. The other hens aren't having issues getting up to them. I don't think it's the boxes themselves. I feel if the boxes were unreachable for them they would lay on the coop floor or in the corners. Some of my older hens in another...
I'm not sure which chickens are doing it, but at least 2 are laying from the roost. Half the time they break, which obviously drives me nuts. Is there any way to get them to start using the box like the others?
I have Wyandottes, NH Reds, Barred Rocks, and an Easter Egger. It's...
The confinement is the main issue for me. I'd love to just pasture them, but we have a lot of predators. This batch I had in a tractor which was in electric netting. I didn't lose any, fortunately.
That's one of the reasons I'm looking at trying to manage a dual purpose flock. Longer...
They were mellow and friendly, but they were also nasty. I also noted that it WAS the manner in which they were raised. I'm sure, if raised differently, that they'd be fine. That's not the result I was after, though. I was after large harvestable birds in a short time with an eye to...
I'm new to all this. A year ago I moved to the country and now I have bees, maple taps, 2 layer flocks, pigs, garden, broilers, etc. Nothing like jumping in with both feet, but I'm learning as I go.
I didn't want to take them longer because I have no experience. I'll go again in the...
