When to combine chicks with adult hens

I hope they are ok! We have 5-6 week old Plymouth Barred Rocks and two older PBR hens. We're putting them outside during the day in the run while the hens free range. The hens are making all kinds of sounds I've never heard before (but which I take to mean "how dare you bring others into my...

    Ancona Ducks

We got our first ever Ancona ducklings yesterday so our single drake would have friends (and fingers crossed we get eggs). :D They're so cute I can hardly stand it! We put them in with our 4 week old Plymouth Barred Rocks and the hens tried to grab and peck them, so had to separate the brooder...

Burgeoning poultry lover in Oregon w/ a question :D

HI @rjohns39 and thanks! Our friend raised a heritage turkey last year (can't recall the breed) and wants to do the same again, so we thought, why not?! She got it too early in the season so by the time Thanksgiving rolled around it was 50 lbs. They had to cut it in half it was so big. :lol...

    Oregon

Thanks peckpeckpeck and sorry about your chick. :( I found this great thread on the forums that had questions to ask Craigslist sellers. (Could use for anywhere you buy, actually.) We have Plymouth Barred Rocks, which are excellent layers and don't mind the snow and cold at all. We just...

What am I? Drake in Oregon

Thank you all! Just researched all the suggestions and he definitely seems like an Ancona. We had no idea the breed when a NextDoor neighbor posted "free duck" so it's been fun to learn. And now I have some more homework to learn about Anconas, Magpies, and "hatchery quality." :)

Hi everyone -- I just joined today but have been reading forums and articles for years now. We got our first set of hens last summer, and a free drake from a neighbor in the fall. We love our duck but don't know what he is! We're hoping to get some hens and possibly ducklings of the same...

Burgeoning poultry lover in Oregon w/ a question :D

Hello all! We got our first pair of hens (Plymouth Barred Rocks) last summer from a friend who was downsizing, along with her chicken tractor and bunch of other goodies. We love getting almost a dozen fresh eggs year-round. We then added a duck in fall 2017 that came free to us from a neighbor...
