Where can I get Light Sussex's in the USA

I bought some eggs from that farm in Kentucky - ZERO hatch rate !

    Light Sussex

If they are in deed PUREBRED Light Sussex, they should have black feathers showing up by no later than 2-3 weeks of age.

    Light Sussex

Did you say you got the eggs off of EBay ? Who sold them to you ? I got some from 2 - 3 diff. breeders. The first ones had 1-2 that hatched: the 3rd batch came from Donna Scheiffelbein...All air sacks appeared ruptured, except one egg...so I got one little chick. It appears to be a cockerel. (I...

    Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Yes, know all about Greenfire.... and their $40 shipping for 12 chicks. Yes, it is a MUCH higher cost than anyone else's shipping prices. I also live in Florida, but it would cost me more than $40 in gas to go there ( Greenfire) and back ! Thanks for the info !

    Swedish Flower Hen Thread

It gives them TOTAL control over having any local competition for selling these birds. It helps to keep their prices high. It is called GREED, if I am not mistaken. And I don't think I AM mistaken, in this case. My unhappiness is with the fact that they advertised them on their website as...

    Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Oh, how SWEET ! I have been trying to get some of these chicks for a while now....the one farm that sells them around here won't sell to anyone locally...even tho' on their website, they have them listed as for sale. To me, that is dishonest and is like the old "bait and switch." Personally, I...

Comment by 'monkeywoman1953' in item 'Rhode Island Red'

Oh, and BTW, I currently also have some of the "Gold Sex-links," that are a cross of the RI Red x RI Whites. They are very sweet calm birds, too, even as youngsters. Came from Ideal Poultry in Texas., a BIG commercial hatchery. Haven't started laying yet, so am not sure about egg production, but...

I guess whether or not the RIR's are mean-tempered birds depends on your basic bloodline. I USED to have some that were aggressive, years ago...they were commercial hatchery chicks. The ones I have now are nice, quiet birds, not aggressive to my other chickens, nor humans, and don't mind being...

    First one in the brooder!

Oh, I LOVED the pic of the little guy in the Easter basket -- TOO cute !! Yes, it's stressful -- but in a good way, no ? And DEFINATELY exciting, too !

    We have pips!!

If they are pipping early, it sounds like your temp. is a little too high. But that's not important now. For future reference, it is good to know when to stop turning the eggs so you give the chicks a chance to get "situated," so they can hatch out ok.

The 4th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long

Oh, dear ! That is from the humidity being too high the last 3 days of your incubation period ! The chicks fail to absob their yolk sacs. This is what was recommended to me, and has worked very well for me: Keep the humidity around 50% for the first 18 days, and 70% the last 3 days. If you...

The 4th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long

I missed getting my eggs into the incubators to participate in the Easter Hatch-A-Long, but mine are due on April 11th ! I am using 3 separate LG still-air styrofoam incubators. The incubators are on sale at Tractor Supply for only $35, as well as the egg turners for the same price. That's like...

NICE birds ! I have some black black Olive Eggers, as well as Mille Fleurs, too. I have about 100 chickens of about 15 diff. pure breeds. Also have some of Erhard Weihs' show stock Welsummer eggs in one of the incubators. Have 27 fertile eggs out of 27 set ! LOVE MY CHICKENS !

The 4th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long

They are so cute ! What breed are they ? Yeah, they do silly things sometimes...but you ain't seen nuttin' yet -- wait 'til they grow up ! So amusing, chickens are ! You will love them, I am sure. I have had chickens for over 50 years, and have never grown tired of them or their antics. I hope...
