    Palliative Care

Thank you. As a vet tech(ret.) it's hard to do nothing.

    Palliative Care

We love our hens, are vegetarians, I am a retired vet tech. We have had a small flock of egg layers for about 10 years. They live in the barn inside an insulated large size , rodent proof coop. We went into keeping hens hearing about chickens that live ten years or more. In the last decade we...

    Chicken passed, what to do

We live on a farm so have room to bury them. We love our girls too! We have kept them frozen, double bagged in our freezer until spring. You can also bury them in compost. Leaving them to nature is also okay with me. We have had animals dug up after burial. I'm not too upset. We love all animals.

    Chicken loss and grieving

Thankyou for your very insightful words. We couldn't agree more. When we came to our dream farm it was essentially for our two horses. We thought having chickens as pets would mean they would live long happy lives. We didn't take into account the very poor breeding and disease control. Going to...

    Chicken loss and grieving

Thanks. Good advice. Though we don't want to watch our girls go one at a time, I agree that intentionally exposing hens to a terrible virus is not okay. Very helpful advice.

    Chicken loss and grieving

It's funny, almost everyone I know kinda just grabs chickens from all over. They almost all came...

    Chicken loss and grieving

Thank you for your support and kindness. I didn't word my post well. Our girls all came from different sources. If we were to start over we were told to get them all from one breeder. But most of our hens came from breeders ? What is to prevent us getting IB again? Is it wrong to get more hens...

    Chicken loss and grieving

Is there a thread for this? I realize that many people keep chickens to eat or otherwise use. We keep our girls to enjoy and care for and eat whatever eggs they leave. Perhaps we shouldn't have hens. Maybe we are too "soft". We lost another hen yesterday. We lose one or two a year. None of our...
