I did the same thing. I used to have flat boards but they were hard to clean and were covered in poop. After switching to the branches and putting sand and cat litter on the floor it’s easy to keep clean. I have the branches at different levels and that seems to help in the pecking order skirmishes.
I have 2 adult dogs that I had before I started raising chickens in my small backyard. There was a learning curve and they killed 3 chickens in one fell swoop when I was still getting them used to each other. I pulled back and was rotating them —chickens out dogs in— then dogs out and chickens...
I have urban backyard chickens. Recently a shopping center behind my house installed security lights that shine into my yard and coop. I used a dark tarp to extend the roof on that side and added a repurposed matchstick blind directly to the wire on that side. My coop has a lot of ventilation...
I built my coop. But if I did it over again I would buy a shed and convert it. Pinterest has a lot of ideas. And I agree with the comments about premade coops. Way too small and flimsy.
I have 6 chickens in a backyard coop with an attached run. I have a vinyl tile floor in my coop which is raised about 18 inches over a wood deck. The hens go into the coop to lay their eggs and to roost at night. Otherwise they are in the run which no longer has no vegetation just dirt. I let...
I live in Corpus Christi Tx. Hot humid windy. Sounds like paradise right? The sand and unscented clumping cat litter Mixture I use is just on the coop floor which is under a roof so it doesn’t get hot. The chicken run is dirt. Used to be grassy but chickens happened so .... if you use just...
I also live in a warm humid climate near the Texas gulf coast. I have a 4 ft x 8 ft coop with a large attached run. The coop is elevated and I put stick on linoleum on the floor. I use a combo of sand and clay unscented cat litter on the floor. I clean the poop up daily with a sifter I made...
Have you checked their vents? When they poop sometimes it gets crusty and clogs. You need to make sure it’s clean. A little water on a paper towel and clean their little bottoms. Other than that I am stumped.
I loved every Americuana I have had. I have a Buckeye that shows no fear. Always first but not bossy. And third my gold comet sexlinks. Small hens start laying at 16 weeks and you’ll never get a rooster. All the ones I named are friendly and personable.
