Broody hen and 8 chicks outside of coop

@sourland @JacinLarkwell We have mama and chicks coraled in a portable dog crate but they all skatter when we go out there. The holes in the crate are too big so the chicks run out. We put a smaller crate inside the larger one, hoping they will all go in the smaller one. There is straw in the...

Broody hen and 8 chicks outside of coop

One of our gray hens went missing and we thought a predator got ahold of her. This morning, we discovered her in our front yard with 8 baby chicks. They are all outside of the chicken run. Our chickens are free range, so while the other chickens can get to this broody hen and her chicks, the...

How old to let outside on warm day?

Thank you! I did not get a chance to add the little chicken run today but if tomorrow is nice, I am going to let them enjoy some outdoor time. 😊

How old to let outside on warm day?

Hello, Our chicks are only two weeks old. They are being kept in a locked coop with a heat lamp. If I make a very small chicken run near the door of the coop are they old enough to allow them to go outside if the temp is above 80? Thank you!

Appreciate help with ID or sexing please

I hope so, Cluckstar! We had some Delaware hens a while back and they were our best layers. Though our rooster is part Delaware as well. He is a Delaware, RIR and Araucana mix.

Appreciate help with ID or sexing please

We hatched the three small ones and bought the four larger ones from a neighbor who wasn't quite sure of their breed - possibly ameraucana. Appreciate any info regarding breed or sex. The little black one is quite comical. He has a tiny bit of what looks like a comb coming in, so I've been...

    What breeds do we have?

We just hatched three of chicks this week also and bought four from a neighbor. I am wondering the breed of the four that we bought and will be posting pics here as well. Good luck with your chicks. They all look healthy and fluffy! Look for mine. They look so much like yours!

Can I feed my chickens peanut shells?

Seems like it would be fine to add to bedding and a great example of recycling. As far as bedding goes, we have recently tried sand in the chick brooder and it's great! We bought the construction grade sand and change it out every other day. It produces much less dust than other bedding...

Keeping a hen as a pet

Thanks for the input, Sharon. I would really like her to be part of the flock, but she is soooo tame with people, yet seems scared to death of chickens. She is not even afraid of our 3 dogs or the barn cat. I will give her a little more time out with the flock, but if she continues to be missing...

Integrating a hen into the flock vs keeping her as a pet

Will do. She does let one of the hens near her as long as I'm there, too. I'm just worried when she leaves the flock at night. Thank you!

Integrating a hen into the flock vs keeping her as a pet

We have the sweetest Golden Laced Wyandotte hen, but she prefers to be with humans rather than the flock. Our other chickens do not pick on her, but she is scared to death of them. She runs and hides if any of them come near her. We have two roosters and eleven hens altogether. The other ones...

Keeping a hen as a pet

Thanks! I will try to repost. We have been trying to acclimate her into the flock, but after two weeks, she is still more interested in being with humans. Last night, when we do our nightly roost check, she was no where to be found. That is why I'm considering keeping her on the screen porch...
