    Bow legged with Swollen Belly

Hey all and thank you in advance. I have a chicken that has become bow legged and, when I picked her up today, noticed her belly was swollen. When I took a better look, her belly was also irritated and red, like she'd been pecking at it. I did have a SUPER big egg the other day, but not sure...

    First Eggs at 4 months!

Thanks! This is our first flock. Ironically, as we got them for the eggs, I'm a bit hesitant to eat them. It's like an invasion of their privacy or something...lol...or like I'm stealing them without their consent. I had noticed they started bawlking a lot louder over the past couple of...

    First Eggs at 4 months!

Today we noticed our first eggs! And our Red Stars are only 4 months old. We thought we had a couple more months at least. Guess we need to get those nesting boxes ready. Although, it appears they didn't mind the far corner of the coop!

Are female baby guineas extra small?

Thank you - it's good to know that males and females all grow the same way. And more good to know that we don't have 14 males and only 1 poor female! Yikes. Anyway, our lil' un' seems very happy and, except tiny, quite normal and doesn't seem to be being bullied by the others, so that's...

    Raising Guinea Fowl 101

We just purchased 15 from Cackle Hatchery online a few weeks ago. I just checked and they hatch them from May to August.

Are female baby guineas extra small?

We are new to raising birds and have 15 three week old guineas. One of them has hardly grown at all. The rest are of similar size (pic attached). Is it just a female or is there another issue? Also, they are frightened to death of us. Is this normal? We're planning to coop train them w/...

    First Rain Storm

My silly 7 week olds bum rushed the chicken door of the coop as soon is it started thundering and lightening this afternoon. They wouldn't go back inside, even though the chicken door is open to the run. They're drenched! It's supposed to rain all night and not be too cold, but... just wanted...

    Chickens apparently love salt?

Other than their chick feed, our 6 week olds will only eat bacon or noodles with balsamic vinegar a butt load of salt on it. Is this normal or are they lacking something in their diet?

My metal shed turned chicken coop

What state do you live in, Hokum? And is the 3 tier so the birds can get under in hot weather?

My metal shed turned chicken coop

Hello! We have the exact same scenario here - an old unused metal shed that we want to turn into a coop. My concern is that it may get too hot in there. We will, of course, have ventilation and a couple roof vents, but did you find heat to be a problem at all? Or anything else? We live in...

    Cordwood Coop Design Approval

It is a view of all angles - top, front (sorta...I wanted to show the round walls) and side. It is 15' round for the most part - with a 10' flat side for the nesting boxes and door. I'm most concerned about the term "ventilation" because how much is too much? All of my ventilation will be on...

    Cordwood Coop Design Approval

Sorry - didn't realize how hard that would be to see. If you can't read the words they say: Each square = 1 sq ft; Appox 160 sq ft - 15' in diameter; 8 nesting boxes - stacked 4x4; 2 roosts - 15' x 12' set at 2' and 3' respectively - 2x2 dowel; Closed side facing NW; Open wire top.

    Cordwood Coop Design Approval

Hello all! Long time reader, first time poster - and first time chicken owner. I've finally took the plunge! We have 7 four week old pullets and have 15 guineas coming in early June. I've designed this cordwood coop for 30 birds in the event we get more. We live in central Virginia where it...
