No good. The 2 left died trying to get out!! I helped at day 25 but not sure if it ended up being my fault. But 1 previously died and I didn't help so thought i would try!
Not gonna try anymore now this side of Xmas as the weather is cold for them to go out once big and old enough :(
I have 2 eggs on day 25. I made a hole in the air cell to find out what was happening as I thought they had died.
Anyway, they are moving against the membrane separating them from the air cell with no sign of pipping. I am keeping it damp as it looks thick and quite white but lots of blood...
Would it have all dried out inside if chick was dead??
The veins are still quite thick. Does this suggest the chick is still alive??
The 1 I opened that was dead had no blood vessels left.
I made a little hole in the shell as I had read a post suggesting this and I'm sure 1 of them is still alive. The blood vessels are still thick though. Would they have shrivelled if it is dead? I've wrapped them in warm wet paper towels and humidity is now 60 with only 2 air holes covered. This...
Ok the other eggs are on day 24 and no sign. I have just candled and there was movement in 1 of them!! I've tried to increase the humidity by taping up 2 of the air holes?! Is that a good idea?
What if it is stuck like the earlier 1? Should I help or be patient?
So I decided to give it a helping hand as you suggested, I did a float test first and he floated as a viable egg would. After breaking into the air cell it seemed obvious that it had dried out. Unfortunately I had a fully grown and developed little chick but he was dead! I am very sad as this...
Thanks for that. I have come home today and the shell is now looking a little porous. Is this normal. It's like changing from a nice solid cream colour to a porous kind of almost grey!! Very strange. I will up the temp a little. I'm in the uk so humidity quite low here.
Will keep you posted!
Just to add the beating type thing was rounded and not as I have seen pics of like a little beak?
And also the shadow type line has a patch of greyish near it that is similar to when you get an egg that has a porous or thin type shell, it did not have this to start with and has been a perfect...
Day 22 and I candled (I know I probably shouldn't have but need to know where things are going wrong)
I did this as a grey line appeared around the outside of the egg and I haven't seen anything like this in any forums! Anyway there was movement inside and what I can only describe as a beating...
Ok, so I keep chickens but have never hatched any myself. My dad made me an incubator which didn't work, I tried twice with 6 eggs in each. I know the problem here was because the regulator for the temperature was too localised and so the heater would switch off too soon and the eggs were nit...
Ok, so day 10!! Next question, If there is only 1 fertile egg and it is growing will 1 chick be ok on its own?? Or should I get a couple of day old chicks to keep it company?
Thanks
I will just have to wait and see I guess and check again on day 10. Maybe I will invest in 1. My dad made mine from a propagator and a heat mat with a thermostat, it's a very simple thing. Maybe those other eggs just weren't fertile. They can never be guaranteed.
Bound to be cockerels because I...
