!! Urgent but not life threatening !! Chick shoes -- ever too soon?

She just has curled toes not splayed legs luckily. If I can get her to stand up well her toes do straighten out - but it's a little bit of a catch 22. I'm giving her a rest for now. Maybe physical therapy will help.

!! Urgent but not life threatening !! Chick shoes -- ever too soon?

Sorry I've been searching but I'm frantic - you guys are wonderfully patient!! A chick had trouble hatching and she;s out but her toes didn't develop properly (we had to unzip the shell for her - malpositioned) She didn't have enough resistance to get her toes formed right - I could tell as...

Day 14 - we started them out fat side down in the incubator!!!

FYI -- we turned them fat side up and now at day 20 they are pipping - many on the side of the shell and one at the small end of the egg -- so it seams fine for the most part - no harm done at that point anyhow.

Day 14 - we started them out fat side down in the incubator!!!

We have a stupid oscillating incubator -- we've been thinking of just turning them onto the pointy end now but worried it would disorient them. (durr or something -- I sound so foolish -- because I AM obviously!) We have our x on one side o on the other and see them moving side to side...

Day 14 - we started them out fat side down in the incubator!!!

Is there anything to be done about it now? We started our hatching with clean eggs from our chickens - didnt sterilize but there was no poo on any of them. My husband put them fat side down in the incubator -- we have some DARK black spots as if the chick is sticking to the shell -- is all...

A Hen died and I'm not sure why

I had time and light to check out the situation more thoroughly. No broken neck. She had that same bare baldness on her butt, but no damage to her skin. I checked hens for mites/lice and no sign (I almost freaked until I noticed it was a dust bath residue) The coop is clean too thank...

    Hen swallowed my earring!

Awe -- poor girly. Chickens love shiny things! I call shy hens over with my wedding ring. Hope she was tasty.

Broody pullet? What should I do?

Hahaha. My Barred Rocks especially Kung Pao who was "mother hen" since she was 2 days old to all her sisters. I found wearing my fingerless gloves eases MY fears. She's so adorable growling at me. I'm wondering if I can make her go broody in the Spring by putting her own feeder and water...

A Hen died and I'm not sure why

Oh -- and I'm not sure what she might have gotten into outside.... but I can't imagine anything that different from always. We like to give them foraging time once a day but most stuff is dead now (we're in NJ).

A Hen died and I'm not sure why

I feed them Layena crumbles available always in the feeder. Morning & late afternoon I throw about 3 cups of scratch on the the ground and about a cup or more of grit. SOMEONE has been crapping in one of the water feeders the past two days - I change it every time I've discovered it (they get...

A Hen died and I'm not sure why

Today I found one of my hens dead in our coop. Here is the back story: We have 7 Barred Rock pullets (all our girls will be a year in April) 7 Jersey Giants and one Jersey Giant roo. They live in a 10x10 horse stall and have always seemed to have plenty of room to run around. They have 6...

Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Thanks - sounds like a plan to start with anyhow. Haha - Maniac is gonna love that He actually might -- he swings between macho and cuddly.

Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

You know what -- I Do have a question. Maniac has (at 13 weeks) a HUGE comb - it's about 2 1/2 inches and it's kind of poor quality points - one or two non-uniform deep points with a few little shallow points on those. (Rooroo is beautifully consistent 5 or 6 perfect little uniform peaks - a...
