    Breed and sex of chicks

It is now September 3 and nobody has said cock-a-doodle-doo! No fancy tail feathers either. Nobody has laid an egg yet, but I think they're all pullets. Whew! They're about 16 weeks now and the wattles and combs are just starting to get red. I'm hoping for eggs before the end of the month...

    Another pic of Millie.

    Breed and sex of chicks

This is Millie. She is just about the cutest little chicken I have ever seen! She sometimes gets separated from the rest of her flock and then calls them. They all come running. They seem to protect her since she's so small.

Oh that would be awesome if they're all pullets! I was starting to think that they would have more pronounced wattles/combs by now if they were roos. I'm going to try to get a pic of the little bantam tomorrow. She is absolutely the cutest thing! Turns out she is a Mille Fleur D'Uccle. She has...

    Breed and sex of chicks

My little chicks are now much bigger and I am still wondering about the breed and sex of these three. They are about 11 - 12 weeks I think. I'm pretty sure the middle one is a female sapphire gem, but the other two I am still questioning both breed and sex. Both of those have some reddish...

I didn't think so either. I also am afraid that Violet is really "Vince" and Petunia is "Petey." Thanks for your input. I guess time will tell. Shouldn't be too long now. They're all starting to get their hackle feathers. The fuzzy stuff is getting rather scruffy.

We had one roo but with only 4 hens the girls were getting a little stressed. Plus he started getting aggressive with me too. We found a great new home for him though. He's Man-about-town on a large homestead with 38 hens! The new owner says he "loves the ladies!" LOL

    Breed and sex of chicks

I got some better pics of the other chicks this morning. The first one is Marigold. Pretty sure she's a she. The second one is Petunia and the third is Violet. The last pic is a close up of Petunia on the left and Violet on the right. I fear those two may be little roos. Those are the two I...

Oh, what a relief! That one is a little spitfire! Seems to hold her own with the others.

    Breed and sex of chicks

Thanks for the input. I was thinking there may be a sapphire gem among them too or maybe a lavender orpington. I was hoping the feathered footed one was a brahma. I didn't know they could be bantam. Do you think it will be a problem having one bantam in a flock? I have 4 hens, one of which is a...

    Breed and sex of chicks

We bought 6 chicks from Rural King 2 weeks ago. They were in the $.25 bin since they were a little older. My best guess is they were 2-3 weeks old. A bunch of random chicks were in that bin so we don't really know what breed they are. Also the employee who helped us did a little test to see if...

Random Pics of My Lil Flock

You've done a great job with your new digs. This has been quite a year, hasn't it?! I hope you and your flock are all settled in and happy.

    Rooster

How interesting! I have seen the new cockerel mount all but one of the hens. She's the top of the pecking order. It will be interesting to see how this develops. Thanks so much for sharing your experience and knowledge. I very much appreciate it. :)

Oh! I saw him do that! I didn't know that was what it was called. Thanks for the info!
