    Rat bite first aid.

Well, I watched him get out, so I can block that access. I'm not sure if that is how he got in. Now that the ladies are safely in bed, traps are being set outside the run to see if we can get the bugger. Thanks.

    Rat bite first aid.

A pack rat got into the coop today. Mamma and the three wee ones are fine. Pauline, my best layer, appears to have been bit on the comb. Lots of blood, but no other obvious injury. I cleaned her up and put some animax antibiotic cream on the cuts. But now I'm wondering... What else do I...

    Momma hen raising

Thank you! I checked on her this afternoon and she has left the nest box and moved into the coop with the wee ones. She has also become much gentler in how she corrals them, so I think it is working this time. Any suggestions as to how long I should keep them cooped up with her, before I...

The hen house is about 3' x 3', with the nest box on the side. Hen is in the nest box. Chicks are hanging out in the house. Should I restrict their space more?

I slipped my hen some chicks early this morning. When they are under her, she talks to them softly. If they sneak out, she chases them back under, but sometimes when they sneak out, her corrections have the effect of chasing them out. I have been able to pick them up and tick them back under...

beak is healed, but now overgrown

Hi all, A few months ago my matriarch broke her beak running from a bobcat into the side of the coop (she was inside - bobcat was out and kept out by the run). We treated her beak and she healed just fine. Today I noticed that the two sides of her top beak have now overgrown, leaving the...
