I was at Orschelns the other day and definitely thought about bringing home a duckling...why I would want one I have no idea but they are so cute!
I haven't been on for a while but I wanted to say I have buff orpingtons and they are now 4 weeks old going on 5. They are all in my basement and...
The chicks are doing well. One of them is definitely the queen of the flock. I was wondering what people do to get the chickens used to you. Whenever I make noise or move around they get nervous and run all over the place. The queen will sometimes jump at me but I flick my hand at her and...
I took a close look at the chicks this morning. I didn't realize how ugly they'd get when they started growing in feathers . They're really starting to test one another to see who's going to be in charge and it's pretty cool actually to see feathers starting to grow in. At first I thought...
That is so funny! I was worried mine would do the same thing so I moved them to a bigger space. A small bin seemed to be too little space for 11 chicks. Now they all have lots of room in large side plastic kid pool with chicken wire around the outside so they can't get out. As soon as I put...
I've been gone for a while. Honestly I didn't know how much of my attention these guys would take up. I ended up with 15 eggs that I thought would make it and threw out the rest because they were no longer developing. Last week I went on lock down on Monday and everyone was supposed to hatch...
That is so cool! I love the pictures of the half broken egg. Once I am done with the incubator at home I am taking it to school and doing an incubating project with my students (luckily I've got a parent who wants lots of chicks). This at home deal is kind of a way for me to figure out what to...
I have 15 that are going into lockdown on Monday. I'm pretty excited about it and working on getting together everything I need for the brooder. WIll they be okay with a pretty strong light or does it need to be dim for night time?
Let us know how the hatch goes. I am still a little fuzzy on how lockdown works and what to look for/wait for. I mean I know that humidity needs to increase and not to bother the eggs but should I be around when they hatch? Does that matter? Will the chicks hurt each other or themselves if...
I candled my eggs yesterday and found that 8 out of the 23 didn't make it. It's pretty amazing to see the differences between one that is growing strong and one that isn't at all. Just about another week and they'll be ready for lockdown.
I haven't checked all of the eggs but I did look at a couple today. They seem to be doing nicely. Sunday will be day 10. Just a couple more weeks and they'll be hatching. 21 days seems a lot longer at the beginning than it does now.
I found a link that shows pictures of "eggtopsies" and explains what went wrong in each picture. It ranges from chicks that were close to hatching to embryos that were barely formed. Might be good to look at...
I do have 23 eggs and that's a lot in town. You can have 20 chickens at the most but it depends on how much property you have in Lawrence. However, I'm really hatching these eggs for my parents who have wanted chickens forever and have a lot more property. Any of them that turn out to be roos...
I am hatching buff orpingtons. I had some temperature issues but the temp seems to have settled now to somewhere between 99 and 100 (that's all I can tell with my thermometer). Seems to me about right. I was thinking of candling but I didn't think they would be ready since I just put them in...
Well it's day four in the incubator and the eggs seem to be doing okay. I've had some over worrying issues with temperature but it seems to have evened out and I now have a working hygrometer in there to keep track of humidity. I feel like the eggs are quickly becoming my babies despite the...
