Yes, everyone is doing well. But yeah, could have possibly been uneven heat I guess. It was in the 60s last night but everyone was good this morning with the heat mat set up I made. The particular salmon faverolle I was worried about seems to have a bad leg. That’s why she couldn’t get up. But...
It was quite late and dark when I posted. I was in the process of making a “mama heat pad” set up as described to me in another thread - I don’t like heat lamps but thought it was my only choice so I’m pleased with this option. Sorry for the lack of details. The set up they were in in the house...
I got a shipment of 30 chicks on Friday. Everybody was fine until today. I woke up to one dead and another very lethargic. An appenzeller was dead and a salmon faverolle was lethargic - she ended up dying a couple
Hours after I found her. Now three more are lethargic and I noticed they have very...
I’m in the finger lakes - same forecast- Where are you? I grew up in Johnstown! I plan to do just that, never heard of it before but LOVE the idea! I think I’ll do a hardwire fence frame to drape the heat mats over because the coop ceiling is probably 5 ft tall though.
So sorry! We have coyotes here too - they howl each night and I lost a cat last year- I have Nigerian dwarf goats so I make sure they’re secure in a room I built every night. I also live on a stream so raccoons just seem to love scoping out my coop. ☹️I went out of town for the night and my...
I haven’t had a shipment in years but a raccoon got all my “special breeds” I splurged for this year. The raccoon is gone now I’m so I decided to try an order. Hoping not to loose many more, they all seem very healthy ♀️
The mats I have are about 1 ft x 2 ft. I have three of them. I’d have to figure out how to mount them to the wall but do you think if I use all three would be enough for the chicks? I also have fencing I could make a “tent” out of and drape the mats over so the chicks could go under them.
Thank you! I’ll set that up and get a temperature read over night. I will feel better about that anyway. I lost a goat to a heat lamp fire a few years ago (she knocked it over) so I’m wary anyway. Never had an issue with my seed mats.
It has ventilation at the top if you can see it there - screen fence and fencing on the undersides of roof overhang too. But I don’t use it in the winter anyway. I have an old milk house attached to my barn with a fenced in run inside the barn - never an issue so far!
I’d like to put them out in the morning. I’ve never heard of the mama heating pad before I read a couple threads and I like the idea. Can you tell me what you use? I have a couple seedling heating mats- would that work? If not I can raise the heat lamp for sure. I’m just worried about them...
