    Meat chickens

And lastly, does anyone know if there a thread about costs of growing meat birds to 8 weeks kicking around? I'd like to raise about 20, but want to calculate out how much that translates for feed. Thanks! I have never done it but... After much reading some of the people with a lot of...

Drake feed versus duck feed - how's this work?

I fed my ducks regular chic starter (non medicated) until the bag was gone. Then switched them over to layer by Dumor. My ducks have run of the lawn and woods with a small creek. I have never given them any grit but there is plenty to be had. I have never offered any other calcium than what...

    Cornish Rocks... should they...

Thanks to all for the info. The answer was kinda what I thought. Although it may be possible to free range only it is probably not feasible. Although with free ranging and scraps from the kitchen it would definitely cut the cost down. I didn't get any answers for the following question...

    Duck Feed alternative?

Quote: Yes that's my point they will put themselves away. But they have to be trained. I normally feed just before dark and lock them in their pen. I am not shackled to my "farm" (some ducks and chickens not much a farm). I own my own business and have friends too. I can come home any...

    Cornish Rocks... should they...

I have never raised any chicken for strictly meat. I currently have some New Hampshire reds (all hens) I have eaten a few and the taste was far superior to store bought. So here is my question which may or may not be off topic. I know that any DP will grow slower, consume more feed and...

    Duck Feed alternative?

Quote: All my ducks free range. I put them in pen at night. You can teach them to go in at night very easy. I feed my ducks once a day. At night. When I come out at night with the grain they come a runnin'. Which by the was sounds hilarious. They all come in and eat their fill then...

    Manual pump recommendations sought

Quote: If you go to any home improvement store and get a drain for a kitchen sink they work great. I have two ponds with them installed. I use a stopper that you would use for a garbage disposal to plug it. Once you cut the whole in it and get the drain in you can bury 1 1/2" pipe for your...

Meat Ducks... They are here.... pics added.

They were $1.60 at the beginning of Jan. I had a choice more ducks or keep my wife. I kept my wife. Would it be my fault if the ducks I have hatch some more this spring?

    Cayuga Ducks

I have 5 of them. I like them plenty my only complaint - they're not the smartest duck. At night I put my ducks in a enclosed area for predator protection. The cayuga are always the last in line and some how when all the other ducks go in the pen. They get "Lost" in the last 5 feet.

    Breeder cages

farrier! : What is the best thing to use to cut pvc pipe longways? If you are cutting short lengths - say 2-3 feet this will work. Measure the outside diameter of your pipe. Use a table saw to rip a board to that measurement. Now if you want a 2' long finished pipe cut it a little longer...

    my khaki campbells photo diary...

Out of all my ducks my KC are by far the quietest. Mine started laying around 20 weeks. They feather out very quickly but the drakes won't get there color until they are mature about the same as the ducks(20 weeks). The good news. They are some egg laying fools mine have really slowed down...

Need help from frugal-minded duck keepers.

Check on Craigs list for chain link fence or chicken wire. Lots of time you can get small pieces of chain link for free. My ducks free range all day and go into a chain link enclosure at night. I have a tarp over part of it so they can stay dry and plastic fencing over the rest to keep...

Duck question from a new guy

My ducks live with my chickens. They all eat the same food. Layer ration and whatever they can find in the yard (free range) and any scraps from the kitchen. I live in VA and have a small stream so water is not a problem. I think that most ducks - maybe not scovies - need water to bathe in...
