I did originally raise 6 girls together. With that size run/coop. None have ever shown an interest in roosting inside. I have a friend who has 5 and hers lay on the coop floor also. I can't free range (township ordinance) nor can I expand the size of the run (again, ordinance).
Room is not an issue. Even if all 5 were out on the run there's 12.8 sq feet per bird and 3.2 inside which is more than most people I know. Nesting boxes hang on the outside (strangely enough nobody uses them) and nobody uses the roost inside. I guess I have weird girls. Right now I need to re...
Thanks Mrs K! As for the run - it is 8x8 - so 64 sq feet with multiple roosts and water/food. They also have access to the coop which is 4x4 and has a long roost and nesting boxes and food. I did have a crate in there but the babies would actually stick their head in the slots and expose their...
Was there blood on a daily basis though? The only other thing I could do is keep them separated until the baby is healed, and try it all over again. But I feel like I have tried everything and they are just not accepting.
Well, I thought I had it figured out. Separated the bully hen. No problems from 2 pm until bed. Kept them apart. Went out this morning, feathers all over and her back is all bloodied again. So I put the babies in the coop and made the big girls be out on the run. This is day 6, I've tried...
Do you know if it's just one of yours doing the bullying? Also I tried when they were younger and if was clear it was a no go. They are 18 weeks now so closer in size to the adults.
I think I might have found a solution!! Whenever I would go out the bigger hens were like la de dah, we aren't bothering anybody. Well I finally saw my BO hen (who loves to make sounds like a rooster on occasion and has been bossy in the past) peck one of the babies legs. I shooed her into the...
I am having a horrible time integrating my Ameraucana chicks with the older girls. I tried when they were younger keeping them separated with a fence in the run and letting babies sleep in a crate in the coop at night. Older hens somehow got over the fence and pecked babies bloody. So I...
She's just on the grass...her sister (who is smaller) walks all over. I will try setting up a safe place for her. So weird though because when I was brooding my six last spring they loved being outside! She's the darker one in the pic
I've got two 8 week Ameraucana chicks who I've been letting out in the backyard when the weather is nice. One is fine and walks all over and even flies little short distances. The other sits like a bump on a log. She won't move. I've picked her up and moved her, stood behind her to see if I can...
I have a question about my buff orpington girls. Both are exactly the same age - just a few days shy of 23 weeks. One has a big comb and wattles, the other a flat comb and no wattles. All my other hens (barred rocks and my Australorp) with the exception of my Easter Egger have big combs and...
I'm in Georgetown Township and our Planning Commission has finally agreed to put some sort of ordinance in place. They stated they are waiting for the model ordinance that MSU is coming out with this month. I cant seem to find any information on a model ordinance, other than one published in...
