Hi there. I completely agree with you. There is no one-way to correctly raise an animal. I personally think corn is a great treat, but I don't think it would make a good staple diet. Just my opinion though. I was here to help Honey Bee, not to argue over corn. It's kinda a dumb argument lol.
Haha, I can see why it's entertaining.
I'm the same way. Moderation is key. And yes, BOSS is great. We gave BOSS to our birds last year and they really liked them. Good luck with your birds!
@Nel75 Thank you. As I said to @Chris09, this is supposed to be a friendly forum and people shouldn't be telling people to "do more research" and "cite sources". It would take me days to figure out where I read everything that I have. And If you have any questions feel free to start a thread...
There is no one-method for chicken keeping. Your way works for you, and mine works for me.
As far as corn goes, every chicken keeper I've talked to has told me that corn keeps chickens warm during the winter. I even saw a show on Animal Planet this week talking about it being a "hot food"...
All of my information has come from websites, books, and here on BYC. I've never read anything from a local feed store. My information has come from my own research and experience. Clearly we have different resources.
My information is based on poultry nutrition. And chickens can indeed...
From my information, corn is by no means a healthy food. All of my information is off of many hours of research. You're free to have your opinion, but I will state that you're the first person I've ever seen to say that corn is a "healthy ingredient". We like to have a friendly and nice...
@Honey Bee
Yes, it is true. Corn is known as a "hot feed" and when digested it heats up the chicken's system. Giving them a handful before bed can be beneficial. It should be avoided during warm summer months. Another member here on BYC stated that "corn is 14% fat and is burned for energy...
I have to second that. I can't imagine not feeding my birds at all. Even if you "only lose a few", they'd probably all be severely skinny and unhealthy.
Yeah, we give a handful of cracked corn a few times a week. It's definitely not bad for them, but being a main ingredient in their regular feed is what I don't like.
I'd recommend using Purina Mill's Flock Raiser. Works great for me and has 20% protein which I really like.
*Thanks @Ol Grey Mare for correcting me about the corn ratio*
One of our Australorp hens has had a bald rear-end since early summer. Not sure why. She lays lots of eggs and is totally healthy. Any reason why they aren't growing back? Is this something that happens commonly?
