A long overdue follow up here:
The ducks did NOT decide they liked the coop. Instead, I made them a separate house on the ground. That worked very well until one of the ducks disappeared (was eaten presumably) during the day one day. The lone duck suddenly was very willing to get in the house...
Just a quick followup: no more white eggs and no eggs from the new chickens at all yet. It must have just been a very light Wyandotte egg. We have had a Wyandotte laying soft-shelled eggs as well--one every few months--so perhaps in our case it is related to that.
Look like we may have the same situation here. I bought five Welsummer chicks from the feedstore in the spring. Today we had our first egg!...but it's off-white.
At first we were sure we had the brown leghorns, but now we are thinking that the lighter egg could belong to one of our Wyandottes...
We had a duck egg just today actually that was a nearly an ounce bigger than any of the three previous eggs. The jump was from about 2oz. to almost 3oz. I don't know if the size will be back to normal tomorrow or not, but I do know it was from the same duck as we just have the one female duck...
Well, after 8 nights in the coop and a total of 6 days locked inside, the chickens all decided to go in at night. But the ducks are still outside on the ground. Will they eventually get the idea or am I wasting my time? Do I need to keep them locked up during the day or just ushering them in at...
I assumed that was just like giving them peas to eat? I actually did give them some peas based on your advice right before I came in and logged on. Lol. Let me know if I'm missing something. Party hats or balloons or something? ;)
Thanks for the response.
Yes, some of the chickens are roosting, but I think they have enough room that the ducks aren't forced to sleep underneath.
The coop is only about 3x5, which I know is a little on the small side. I had intended for the ducks to live out on the pond, but then grew...
I locked my 2 ducks and 4 chickens up for three nights, but it was supposed to get very hot today so I let them out into the run.
At night, 3 of the chickens went in on their own. But the ducks hung around the outside and quacked, and when I went back out later to check on them, the whole gang...
This forum has been such a great resource. I just want to say how much I appreciate everyone's input and their enthusiasm. I started our flock in March, but I've been using this site to research things like coop dimensions and breed types since the very beginning of the year.
I put off signing...
