    Young Bear

The video cam is set. Maybe tonight I will see that bear again. Sara and I saw some poops on the property on the way to the clif Sunday, he is around and healthy. Someone said something about the bear only wanting food and not the actual chickens. The day he broke into the chicken run, I...

    Young Bear

No, not me. Will not pepper the bears but with shot because he wants to eat those chickens. The bears were here before we were. I appreciate where I live and my surroundings. You know, people pay money to vacation places like this and sit back in hope to see a bear or other wildlife. I am...

bryan99705, I am doing the high voltage fence. These products vary anywhere from 1kv to 10kv. From my readings, 5kv is effective for cattle whereas 8-10 is effective for deer/ bison? (don’t ask me?) Nowhere have I seen bear. The 10kv units for a super-short fence run less than 1 mile HV...

    Young Bear

All of these suggestions are good ones, many of which I have not thought of. Shooting the Bear is not going to work for me though. I have lived here many years with the bears without real problems. This is my first experience with chickens and looks like I will have to step up the...

    Young Bear

Peanut Butter is something that I do have! I will dip the Bacon into the Peanut Butter that is attached to the high voltage electric fence. How can I go wrong? Actually I hope there will be no bear tonight, but in the event the “bear-cam” is set and active so I will be able to share the...

I am a cyclist and distance runner, bacon is not an approved food found in the fridge. I will obtain some though and use this tacit. Thanks for the help. Great idea!

    Young Bear

Hello and thanks to everyone who supplied an answer to the bear problem. Is seems the best solution will be implementing an electric fence. We will try this. I did set the wildlife cam up tonight to catch an image of the little beast if he decides to revisit. For anyone interested in viewing...

    Young Bear

I am new to chickens but accustom to having plenty of bears around. Last night a young bear ripped apart the chicken run, he did not seem to be interested in the chickens (safely locked in their house, this time) but some remains of feed that was on the ground inside the fenced run area. This...

    Too cold?

Here was my solution for cold weather heat lamp control. I use a 250w red lamp and picked up a commercial engine block heater controller. It works like a extension cord and it’s in a water proof small box. Works great. When it’s cold the lamp comes on.

Chicken Comb Color Question- 4 week olds.

Hello. Maybe someone with knowledge above and beyond mine, which is something close to nothing, could help? I have one larger pullet, she is all black and her comb is also black. All others are a light color and beginning to develop a pink/red color. The group of pullets are ~ 4 weeks old...

Anyone else buy their chicks before they had a coop?

I am uncertain our efforts will be successful with these chickens. There are a LOT of hawks around here. I saw one last week snatch a cold robin out of the field. Only a hand full of feather remained on the grown. We have bears too. Not much I can do about Mr. Bear, he is on top of the food...

Anyone else buy their chicks before they had a coop?

My girl friend and I did the same thing. Chickens without the coop. Although I did start the coop before getting the chicks, very bad weather (cold and rain every day) has prohibited early completion of the fancy “bling-bling” chicken house I dreamed up. All the framing is complete, rafters...
