Cochin

Cochins came from China in the 19th Century. They were recognized by the APA in 1874. They were...
Pros: Attractive, Likeable,Friendly, Energetic,and Enthusiastic!
Cons: Rowdy
Cochin's are a lot of fun. They are beautiful and are perfect for breeding. A great beginner bird!
Pros: Friendly, Docile, Fluffy, Cute, Lovable
Cons: Not very good egg layers
I love Cochins. Thats it
Pros: Very sweet, friendly, quiet, likes to cuddle
Cons: Feathered feet get nasty sometimes, gets hot easily, bottom of pecking order
I have a red cochin pullet named Pie. She is one of my sweetest birds! I would definately recommend this breed if you have children. I don't have kids, but this pullet is so gentle I wouldn't worry about any kids being around her. She will gently take feed out your hand, doesn't peck, and loves to cuddle. I don't know how broody she will be in the future as she is not old enough for that, but I really like cochins.
Pros: Friendly, Good Mothers, Beautiful.
Cons: Eggs, Feet Feathers Break when Free Ranged.
Love these birds! thinking of breeding blues and partridge.
Pros: Adorable, good layer, beautiful, friendly, protective.
Cons: NONE
LOVE my girl Henrietta the white cochin! She is the sweetest most mild mannered bird. (unless you provoke her) she is very protective over her kin. But overall just likes to lounge around and eat all day. He walk is the most adorable feather-footed chicken waddle ever! truely a sweet sweet bird <3 <3 <3 would definitely get more. I do feel bad for her when its raining and her little white feet get all muddy but I try to keep her in when its raining out.
Pros: so adorable!
Cons: mean
My cochin is my least favorite from the coop because she has been broody for majority of her life and will attack anyone who comes near her... even when she wasnt broody and was first introduced to the big coop she started fights with the hens and every night would sit at the top of the roost (where the top hen sleeps).. this was quite funny although she became a very easy target to get picked on because of all that sass. i willl not be getting a cochin again.. but will let her hatch some babies this summer hopefully that helps
Pros: Very friendly, calm, quiet, lay medium sized eggs, roosters are sweet, hens are adorable
Cons: none at the moment!

Beautiful, fluffy, sweet birds! The hens are great egg layers and lay perfect sized eggs! My rooster is calm gentle, a little shy, but over all amazing! They are really sweet with kids, too! The hens are known to go broody, but it doesn't occur too often in my case. Also, they are fluffy ( which I love) and when they "run" they look like they are hopping from one foot to another! So cute to watch! I love these birds and encourage you to give them a try!
Pros: nice, sweet to people, hardy, docile.
Cons: can be mean to other chickens if not raised with them, very fast and dont like to be held for very long.
i have 2 Cochins, a black bantam hen (Lucy) and a white standard Cochin hen ( Snowy) they are very nice but when i put my new birds with the flock Lucy was very mean to them and its been about 2 1/2 months and she is still mean to them not as much as before but she wont let them eat when she eats or perch by her at night, if one does dare to, she attacks them and pushes them of the perch. put Lucy is very nice to people, she will walk up to you and want to be held but only for a short time, and snowy is VERY fast, she will keep running and running, it take me 10 min. to catch her!! but when you pick her up she is sweet. lucy is 1 year and 4 months, snowy is 2 months 11 days.

hi! update: i sold my white cochin last fall and i am sad to say my sweet little lucy has died.... i have no idea how, she was not being her spunky self and about 3 days later she passed away.

Pros: Beautiful big birds, friendly, entertaining, make wonderful mothers, lay well
Cons: Small eggs for such a big bird
I have had 3 cochins and have loved every single one of them. My first two were bantams and they were both very friendly. One was frizzled and I had to re-home her because she got picked on by my full sized birds (I was new to chickens and didn't realize how mean they can be to each other, never keeping a frizzle again) and she now lives in a bantam flock. The second was a flat feathered bantam who was so friendly! She went broody and hatched some chicks for me and was the best mother, so good she protected her chicks from a dog attack and was killed. :(

NOW I have the biggest lavender cochin! And she is BEAUTIFUL and so fun to watch. Her name is Loola. She's a bit stand-offish and while all my other chickens are very treat driven, it doesn't' work with her. When I let my chickens out of their run to forage around my yard she tends to do her own thing and is always the last to go back in (to the point where the rest have gone in and she 's outside alone and I have to herd her back in).

She's a wonderful layer, I get an egg from her almost every day, but her eggs are so small compared to her size (and the eggs from my other chickens).

I would love to have more cochins in the future.

Here are some pictures of her:

Pros: Great brooder, and very doscile.
Cons: Won't protect their peeps if other hens are around because of how doscile they are.
We have a Buff Cochin. Fluffy is a really nice chicken and will literally have a conversation with you. Fluffy was recently in the hospital pen as she went on a hunger strike but got back to normal and talked with me daily. I even let her out and she helped me around the wood shop. She is a very good brooder but if she is back in with the other hens and her peep is introduced too soon she will not protect them. I think because they are very passive and loving. Fluffy lays about once a day sometimes every other day. We did have a Black Cochin rooster but he got sick and died. He was really pretty.
Pros: The cold does not bother them at all! Tamed very easily.
Cons: Summers are hard for them.
If you have them under the right conditions (stress free) they will lay almost every day! They are great birds for cold weather because of the mass amount of feathers. Summers can be very hard for them with overheating and extra measures must be taken to make sure they are okay. They make wonderful pets. I got mine and they had not been around humans for the first year and a half of their lives after a few short weeks they were very tame. I would highly recommend as pets.
Pros: Docile, calm, easily adapts to knew flock
Cons: They bully younger birds, are hard to get consistent laying, and easily overheat in the summer
I had the birds until mid summer when they started dying from heat exhaustion even though they had plenty of water; they hardly ever laid an egg even though I bought them when they were supposed to start laying so in the end I was out the cost of the birds and the feed I bought.

Pros: Cute, fluffy, don't wander, don't eat a lot, stay with the rooster
Cons: Not very good layers, really panicky, pretty timid, get picked on a lot
My Cochin was pretty darn cute, and very pleasant to have. But she gets picked on a lot and unlike some of my other, larger hens, she wont' defend herself if another chicken is messing with them.

She's pretty panicky, but once I got rid of my more abusive roosters she calmed down a bit. She'll occasionally let me hold her.
Pros: Sweet and just the cutest little birds!
Cons: Muddy feet but easily overlooked if you love them!
I have a frizzle Cochin named Iggy. She doesn't run up to be petted like other Cochins but she's so curious and funny. She talks to you when you hold her and say her name. I also have a calico Cochin rooster named Teddy. He has a great interest in big hens instead of sticking to a bantam like himself. And last of all Razzle the frazzle Cochin rooster. He was mean until his 2 brothers were sold and now he's so calm. He sleeps on the ground with 4 baby ducks instead of on the roost with the other chickens. No meanness in him any more. So Iggy hasn't laid yet and is around 30 weeks old so... any day would be nice. I'll love her even if she never lays an egg. Cochins are sooo hard to find in SW Virginia, especially hens, so we treasure our Cochins. <3 Can't wait until we hatch some in the Spring.
Pros: large, fluffy, sweet, not a wallflower but not aggressive either
Cons: can be broody, not great layers, small chicken under all that fluff
OK let me just say I LOVE my cochins but that having been said I have a couple in flock of Orpingtons. I think whether a cochin is the breed for you is very dependent on why you have chickens in the first place. If you are looking for a great layer, this is not the breed. if you are looking for a meat bird this is not the breed. If you are looking for a beautiful, sweet chicken to raise chicks and be a pet then this may be the chicken for you. I find that my cochins get along very well with the other chickens in the flock and have adjust well, they will never be the first to peck someone but they won't put up with any guff either. Just the other day I watched a cochin girl stand her ground to one of my golden retrievers and peck a dog that wasn't paying attention and got to close. They won't start a fight but they won't tolerate rudeness either at least my girls won't, the other chickens in the flock will just run off and be frightened, the cochins seem to stand their ground.

I have found them to go broody long and often. My one girl I haven't seen an egg from in months after she spent the better part of the summer sitting in a nest box and no matter what I did I could not break the broodiness. She is lucky she is cute and a pet. Overall I love the cochins but as I said it depends on what you want from your chickens. Some of the others have mentioned feet getting dirty and that they are hard to maintain, I have not found that to be the case. I have not found that the foot feathering gets gross or is difficult, that is solely dependent on your flooring and bedding.
Pros: Sweet, pretty, great mothers, smart and calm
Cons: Broody, small eggs
I love the bantam cochins because of how petite they are. Just little balls of feathers. They are so sweet and have the best personalities, especially as pets. They are also great moms and come in a wide array of colors. Can't say enough great things about this breed. They are pretty dependable layers, but do like to go broody and are very serious about it. Highly recommend this breed, especially for families with children. The roosters are generally very kind and not aggressive towards humans and their hens.
Pros: Beautiful bird
Cons: Doesn't like to be picked up, very loud, dirty, extremely aggressive.
When I started researching chicken breeds to start out with, "Cochin" immediately stood out to me. My friends had some that were the sweetest things, and everyone said they were an absolute joy, so I knew I had to get this Golden Lab of the chicken world. When my little chick arrived with the 5 other females, she was completely fine. She seemed normal, nothing special. Then, I don't know what happened, but she grew up to be the meanest hen in the world. She's aggressed towards all of the others in the flock, and even to the point of inciting the death of one of them. I don't know if I just got the bad egg, or what, but I never want to get another cochin in case I'm stuck with another one of her...

Pros: Very friendly and sweet. Very entertaining ball of feather's.. Child friendly..
Cons: Care to the feathers on the feet as they come in each year. Not to break a blood feather..
I enjoyed bantams growing up.. Can never go wrong having these sweet chickens.

Eggs are optional, but welcomed as they are laid...

a few Cochin bantam eggs this spring to enjoy them once again as my sweet pets... Been looking through for those selling the eggs from the colors I am wanting.
Because pets are a labor of love and may as well go for the breed and the colors you love the most..

I have fallen in love with the Mottled and Milli/calico....cochin bantams..

Pros: good for cold climates, broody, friendly, hardy
This was the first chicken I owned and I still have some of the original stock. They are still laying at 5 years old. I love to watch them waddle around

so cute. They raise their own babies and are great to cross with other breeds to improve cold hardiness. They aren't great layers but they are consistent. I've had feather loss troubles with some of my other chickens but never with the Cochins. I did have one extremely vicious rooster but I think he was an anomaly. I've not seen that aggressive behaviour in any of my other Cochins. I would have a yard full of them if my husband would let me.
Pros: Pretty, nice to other chickens, great layer, best mama I have
Cons: The most skiddish hen in my flock, foot feather get dirty easily
i have a blue cochin and it is by far the most skiddish bird in my flock! But she lays great and is a very good mama. Overall I might get this breed again.:/
