Sex-links are cross-bred chickens whose color at hatching is differentiated by sex, thus making chick sexing an easier process. Sex-links come in many varieties, few of which are a true breed. Red sex-links are a cross between a Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire rooster and a Delaware hen.

Our three hens are just the best! They love to follow our rooster around and be held. They have never attacked us and are a very calm breed. These are a truly great breed.

most hybrid breeds "burn out quick"
unlike a common farm breed that lays much longer but maybe not as many eggs

Thought it was a great review, but we live in Scotland (REALLY COLD WINTERS) our birds do fine, they even love the rain...probably because they're nuts but that could be just my two lol

Just Googled them with UK after, and didn't see anything. They have several sex-linked chickens in your corner of the world, though. Maybe if you contact the Poultry Club of Great Britain (their national poultry show is Nov. 16-17 this year) they can help you??? Or, check out this link to a UK site that seems similar to BYC. They have a map of breeders......If that fails, and as a last resort, you can always make your own RSL chicks by crossing the RIR and Sussex birds. Good luck to you!!!

I agree! I have 3 hens that we got at 19 weeks...they lay beautiful brown eggs and I am getting 3 every single day! For just the two of us...we have eggs to share! Friendly! They are pets....I love petting and holding them! Very sweet and happy hens - my first time ever to have chickens and I will stick to this breed! 100% goes to this breed!

At least some people didn't flip out over my review. Thanks to the people who wrote comments here in a civilized way.

I have one and she is so gentle that I flip her over and rock her and she is fine with it!!!

Yes, these (6) are Red Sex Link hens except "Peepers" the little black and white D'uccle. They all started out looking the same but as they matured it got easier to tell them apart. Top to bottom: Rosie, Scarlet, Red, Jewel, Rubie, and Buffie.

I have a couple of Red Sex Links also. They are very sweet. I would like to get a few more chicks next year. We lost one to a dog attack and saved one. She just has a minor wing defect. Yes, I agree they are really nice breed to have.

We have 6 hens which we bought when they were 13 months old. It took close to 3 weeks for them to adjust to our place but now we get from 3 to 5 nice brown eggs a day. We also have two Wyandott roos which are aprox. 5 or 6 months old and have just recently figured out what their job is. It is funny to see one mate with a hen and she in turn runs him off. But the hens are wonderful! they follow you around and one or two will squat down to allow you to pet them. Great birds to have around.

An observation: when people are discussing cold hardiness, it is well to consider the perspective of the original poster. If you are somewhere where it gets to be -10F (that's -23C) occasionally in winter (thank G-- I no longer live in Iowa), your perspective is different than if 20F (-7C) is considered brutally cold for your area. (Still not considering adopting the Red Sex Links on Craigslist that have just been treated for mites. ;-)

very nice! you may want to try some Chanteclairs some day, they were breed in Canad chickens are amazing animals, you would think they would freeze. but give them a little shelter and they are fine

Thanks for the review! I have five girls, I got as 3 day olds. They are 19 weeks and I've gotten 11 eggs (but I believe all from the same girl) so far. Waiting on the others to start laying soon. They have great personalities, are gentle and follow me when I let them run around the back of the property, which is only when I'm with them. They are curious an docile, do eat like horses and I haven't seen any negatives yet. In my area it doesn't usually get below 20F, but does get really hot since we are no close to the desert here in SoCal. So far, so good!

I've got some Rhode Island White hens and a couple Rhode Island Red roosters and plan on breeding them to get some Red or Gold Sex Links for sale next spring. A lot of folks around here want some egg layers but don't want the hassle of raising chicks. The red or gold sex links are generally super gentle, quiet and extreme egg layers. Just what all these city folks around here want and I can sex them at day two by the color so no one gets roosters they don't want.

I agree my red sex sex links are the friendliest hens I have and they lay extremely large eggs. I have recently gotten double yolked eggs that weighed 101 and 105 grams. I get extra large jumbo eggs every day. They only have that grade in Red Sex Links.80-90 grams

They don't make egg cartons big enough for 105 gram eggs! Tell your girls to lay you a dozen or so of those at county & state fair time! Grand Champion eggs for sure!!!

Sadly we lost our beloved Barbara to impacted crop last week :( She seemed to be getting better and then we found her one morning, it looked like she'd just sat down for a nap and not woken up. She looked quite peaceful.

I have ten Red-Sex Links and love them! This is my first North-Eastern winter with them, and they seem to be doing fine. EXCEPT for the frostbite on their large combs. Is this what you mean by "not cold hardy"? Any suggestions?
