Great door-at first….
Pros: Easy install
Cons: Poor design
Expensive parts
Weekly maintenance
Initially this door was GREAT-until it wasn’t.
The bottom corner pivot point gets jammed with debris (chickens do what they do) and the motor keeps trying to close until a) the motor burns up or b) the corner of the door at the pivot point breaks off.
After 3 repairs, more than $300 in repair parts, and being told “well, I guess you need to oil it more often” (supposed to oil corner every 6 months -as labeled on chicken door) I bought a COMPLETELY new chicken door system. I would never recommend the Pullet-shut door to ANYONE.

I'm sorry you had issues. If the bottom hinge is never lubricated, it will eventually bind and break. We recommend putting a drop of oil on it every 6 months but many customers forget and go years without lubrication, it depends on your environment. The motor will sense if there is an obstruction and will stop, so it is not possible for the motor to keep running until it burns out. In fact that has never happened. For the repairs, a new door panel is $50, if the motor is needed it's another $50. I'm not sure how $300 was spent. I notice that the post was done on the first day the account was created, and the user has not logged in since.
Repeat Customer!
Pros: Incredibly EASY to install! I am beginner level in all things handy (36 yo woman) and I installed it all within an hour at 7pm at night using my husbands tools.

No need to charge the battery first. Worked immediately upon install.

Customer service is beyond exceptional. Spoke with one of the owners when I called the phone number. Very friendly and helpful! My question was regarding the type of caulk needed to glue solar panel to plywood. Answer- any standard window caulk. I had exterior/interior caulk handy and had worked wonderfully.

YouTube videos available to watch before install. They were very helpful!

Photo sensor is a light gathering device and it works wonderfully!!

100% made in the US!!

Has worked flawlessly for me!
Cons: Not exactly a con, more like a side note… but Comes with one magnet. If you loose it, you must buy another. Personally, I only needed the magnet to set the door timer and for training the chickens to go to their new coop. Otherwise it is kept on the side of our entryway gun safe. I would hate to loose it since it’s the only one I have but customer service is so great- I don’t see getting a replacement being a big issue.
Originally, I pulled the trigger on the purchase because it was 100% made in the USA and install videos seemed incredibly easy. Figured I could do it myself and let the husband tackle other projects on the endless list.

Well, I loved the pullet shut door from in packaging to install, from install to application! I love it so much I have placed my order for a second door to be installed (by me) on our duck house! I enjoyed the process of installation. Needing only a few building tools like an impact drill, drill bit, leveler and my oscillating multi tool to cut a square into the coop wall. It has works fantastic- the solar panel is effective and esthetically pleasing.

Happy happy customer in VA!

Exceptional product
Pros: 6+ years with no problems at all with no maintenance done. Still working on the original batteries.
Cons: Costly at first but keeps going and going...
I bought two of these doors 6+ years ago. (with the solar set up and the light sensor) We installed them and have not touched them since. It's nice sleeping in on days off and being able to stay in town if something comes up or just want to go to dinner with friends. We did recently have one that started acting a bit odd so we cleaned where the door meets the frame and it started working again. I just ordered a third for our newest coop. I just wish they made some big enough for goats! :lau

Yes, we still have and use the door and it's still working. We have only had to do one repair, and that was in early spring of 2014 when the circuit board that controls the doors went out; one of the chips that controls the timing went haywire, and there is no way to repair the chips themselves, so we replaced the control board. It cost $60, they sent us the board very quickly, and we made the swap ourselves, as it was very easy to do. Been running without any further issues ever since and it's active 24/7/365.

NOT good customer service as far as I am concerned and what a snarky response. Your rating and story just cost them my business.

Thanks for the review. Its great to hear from someone who has actually tried to use the product for a while. The new out of the box,"it looks great" reviews are worthless.

Wow, I am really surprised to hear anything negative about the pullet-shut door. I have had mine for 4 years and I love mine. I did have to replace the back-up battery this year, but all batteries fail sooner or later. That isn't the companies fault.
I have two friend with pullet-shut doors too and they both love them.
I haven't had to contact the company, so can't comment on customer service, sorry you had a bad experience.
I wouldn't have chickens without a pullet-shut door. I love mine.
I would buy a new one if this one ever fails and I couldn't fix it. That is how much I love mine.

We are the manufacturers of the Pullet Shut door. I'm not sure that what you describe is the "Pullet Shut" door. Several things you mention simply are not accurate. There is no 'actuator', our motor directly turns the door. If you spent $100, you bought everything that makes it move. There is no 'little daughter' (unless you count a 30-something year old!), and we would never speak that way to someone. Never. We also include written instructions with parts when someone does buy them. And when a customer has a problem, up front we work with them to identify the problem before just selling parts. We've gotten calls before to only find out the person has another door, not ours. If you do have our door, please contact us (phone and email are on our website, chickendoors dot com).

Great company, they really stand behind their product. I've had one for six years, it does slow down a bit at -15° F, and only opened an inch at - 25°F, but that's because the motor was old. Soon as it warmed up again it worked fine. I got a replacement motor from them, not expensive, easy to swap out. That should fix it.

I loved your response, not snarky at all in my opinion. Professional and detailed. We just got six young hens two weeks ago and we will definitely look to you for our automatic door.

I've had two of these doors for almost 7 years now without any problems at all. Just ordered a new one for a new coop we are going to build. Perfection and very sturdy.

High winds? We have high winds here almost every day. (30-60 mph) Does anyone have this door with a constant wind? I would love to know what you think about how it would hold up to winds? Thanks

This door is simply amazing I’m on year 5 and have not had to touch it. Ice sometimes gets inside frame or overnight and it doesn’t open because there is 3 in of ice on it. Being metal it simply breaks off or I have hit it with hot water and no more issues. Love the light sensor and once the girls learned it opens a second time they wait in line if they were late to get in. Would absolutely buy again.

I have used mine for 6 years with no problems. It is built like a tank and never fails. To close and then open again for any stragglers to get a 2nd chance is just brilliant! I cannot recommend this Pullet-Shut Automatic door opener enough. We have the battery/solar panel/light sensor version and from the second it was installed, opening and closing the coop door immediately stopped being a concern! I like that it is not one of the guillotine types that require additional overhead inside space for them to work. These have so few moving parts and such a robust yet simple mechanism that it is by design that they are so reliable. 5 STARS!

I always wondered how those things work, and always thought a bird could get hurt, but this seems safe. Now if I could only afford...
