The Wyandotte aka American Sebright, were developed in the United states in the 1870’s, in and around the New York area. The first color developed was the Silver Laced variety and they were originally called American Sebrights. The name was changed to Wyandotte (after the indigenous Wyandot people), when they were admitted into the APA in 1883. They were exported to Europe around the same time.

Wyandottes are a calm breed in general and have very nice temperaments. They are good with people and generally get along well in a mixed flock. They are decent foragers, though they do not tend to wander far and are not good flyers. They are extremely cold hardy. The hens are good layers of light brown eggs, good winter layers, will set, and are good mothers. The cockerels make a good table bird. Today they are an extremely popular dual purpose breed and very popular among small flock owners looking for a colorful winter layer.

They have a flat rose comb and bright red face. Today they come in many feather colors and patterns, with over thirty found in Europe, the beautiful Blue Laced Red and Silver Laced are probably the two most popular colors in general. They are very popular as exhibition birds. Many breeds have been used to produce the Wyandotte we know today, including Brahma, Cochin, Hamburg, and Plymouth Rocks. They are also found in bantam size.

It was removed from The Livestock Conservancy's Priority list in 2016 and is no longer considered endangered.

Pros: very sweet, great personality, fantastic with other chickens
Cons: none
My little hen Vicky was so sweet, she had a special bond with my black sexlink Winnie. They did everything together. Vicky had a lot of personality. She was kinda overweight either that or her legs were just far apart at birth.

I'm not really sure how many eggs she laid because the color of her eggs were the same color as all the rest of the eggs.

Least favorite of my small flock
Pros: Decent enough layer
Cons: Prone to lay outside nest box (dropped from roost or in run)
Strong membrane makes cracking eggs messy
Not particularly friendly (esp. compared to Golden Comet)
Two of our six chickens - our first batch, now reduced to five by a sudden death - are silver-laced Wyandottes. I much prefer our Golden Comets and our Olive Egger. The Wyandottes are “OK” but I only use their eggs when I don’t care about unbroken yolks as they’re likely to break getting the egg out of the shell. I’m also getting tired of checking the run to make sure I didn’t miss an egg there. When we replenish our flock we’ll be getting something else.
Pros: Beautiful, bold, friendly, good egg layers.
Cons: Don't necessarily blend in with their environment very well.
Wyandottes are a perfect size and have a great disposition. They are friendly and lay a good amount of eggs.

I would have to agree with Illia. I bought some SLW last spring from MM and they do tend to stick to themselves. not mean, but not overly friendly.Lacing is not awful, but definitely hatchery style. They also range in size by quite a bit. I got some decent sized and some really small.
They are very hardy and do lay well. Overall, I love the Wyandottes of all colors..

The SLWs are now just about 1YO. In the photo they were 8 months or so. PS: I commented you by accident, I was trying to leave this message on the Wyandottes, but somehow commented on yours instead. That's why I deleted it. Sorry!

We are in Otsego County NY, and we got them from a guy in Schoharie Cty, about an hour from us. I believe he got them as 1 day old chicks from a mail order company. He wouldn't say who it was, but it wasn't MacMurray. We found him on Craig's List, and the benefit, aside from not having them shipped, was that we could buy a small quantity and see how healthy (or not). He had SLWs, RIRs and the Araucanas, 3 breeds that we like.
Where are you located?

We have 2 Silver Laced & 2 Golden Laced Wyandottes and they couldn't be more different! While all 4 are friendly and calm birds, the 2 SLW RUN the flock. They are self appointed at large and in charge. They are egg laying machines and, like fifibreen, we will ALWAYS have some Wyandottes. Probably my favorite breed though I do love my Buff Orps!

I'm without wynadottes right now, and hate it! They're wonderful hens, and I love the "saucy" description: if that's not the truth! I've had gold-laced and silver-laced, and am eager to have them again.

Thanks! She is so gentle and sweet...even when she was brooding, she hardly made a noise, and didn't even try to peck at my hand. Candi always waits till everyone else looses attention before she comes up to me to get her share of attention. I always save a few treats for her. She has such a wonderful disposition. Jasmine (My other BLRW) is very similar in demeanor. I think you should get a couple. I definately don't regret mine!

Your girl is stunning! I have really wanted to add 2 splashBLR girls to my flock for their beautiful color. I think the splash is so much prettier than the regular type BLR's. My flock is mostly Wyandottes and even the ones I adopted as older birds have become pretty friendly and tollerate me digging under their bellies to collect eggs in the morning. My Buff Wyandottes are probably my fiercest brooders though, they'll try to get a finger if you mess with them after they've decided they want to brood!

these are really beautiful... i was staying away from wyandottes after my experience with two evil gold laced, but i just might have to have one! I've heard BLR are nicer than the GL, and they are just so pretty. I saw a rooster the other day that was to die for!

Thank you for the complements! I think she is lovely too! I think I lucked out with her...as far as I have gathered, most splash blrw have more washed out orangy color rather than deep rich red from hatcheries.
I have also heard that hatchery wyandottes can be little monsters, but I have never had that experience. My girls are wonderful and mellow and so very sweet. They just aren't cuddly like my orpingtons. They do squat for me, and Jasmine (my blue phase blrw) is always the first to run up for treats.

...I thought that too when mine started laying...they do get bigger eventually! Mine took forever to start laying "normal" sized eggs!

i have 2 wyndotte chicks,a silver laced and a blue laced red wyandotte and both of them are sooo sweet and docile! They both just love to snuggle up and sleep in my lap with their friends:)

i've got 3 silver laced wyandotte chicks (1 wee old now) and while they're not as immediately friendly as my pekin chicks, they do seem to be settling down.. had 2 of them fall asleep in my hands earlier.. so adorable! I wish could have taken a photo!

I find the golden-laced wyandottes make probably the most attractive hens. 2nd would be speckled sussex

Honestly I dont think its that there is a differance in types its just what I see in the particular lines I have. Probably others have differnt traits with their birds I am just reporting what I have seen with my birds

Where do you live? How did you come by such a classic, Dual Purpose bird mix?

The Wyandotte? Or all of them? The four I started with (including the Wyandotte) I got from a guy about forty minutes to the north and a little west, in Colombiaville, MI. He buys hatching eggs from all over and sells the chicks/pullets/birds. I live in Oxford, MI, in the north part of SE Michigan. When we added more birds...I have gotten several from the Uncle of a friend, who is a breeder (beautiful birds!), and the Delaware chicks I just got came from a breeder about ten minutes from my house. :)
