Genetic Hackle

Developed for the long, thin feathers on the roosters, these chickens have been kept only by a few breeders for decades. The feathers are used primarily in tying dry flies, but a new trend is to use these as decorations in hair.

Many breeds have roosters that are prized for their appearance, either beautiful coloring or long tails, but these have an added attraction, the feathers on their neck and back are extremely long. They vary a great deal in all other aspects, as many variations have been created to produce unique feathers for the fly tying trade. They are also commonly called "Fly Tie" chickens.

This picture is of a young trio, the saddle feathers on this rooster now touch the ground. I pulled a saddle feather and it was 12 inches long.

Thank you! I was trying to find photos of your genetic Hackle Fowl, I didn’t see them on the welsbars site but maybe I was not navigating it correctly?

They are pretty hard to find. Glenn got his original stock from me, so they should look a lot like the pic above. I wanted to get them established with another breeder in a different part of the country to keep them available in some fashion.
There is a message thread about them here on BYC and a FB group if you are on there also.

Do you think he is a genetic hackle and would he pass this gene to other birds.
