Imported originally from the Netherlands, this strain was created by crossing a Rhode Island Red hen with a Rhode Island Red rooster. Capable of laying over 300 strong shelled eggs per year, the Golden Sex Link, also known as the Bovan Brown, is a very hearty bird that can withstand cold temperatures. When hatched, the males are a creamy white with the females colored in shades of red.

Cons: poor health, huge eggs at first, but didn't lay for long, don't live long
I had two, loved them, SOOO sweet, unfortunately they didn't live very long due to poor health. R.I.P Ginger and Nutmeg.

Nanalaska,
so interesting to know that GSL can take the cold. They are fabulous chickens. The one I have is the most friendly and fearless, and I think that my others cue off her. Guess I was super lucky to get a strain that isn't skittish. Thanks for the post.

Mine started laying at 17 weeks, My neighbors same thing. Real early....not as cold here, maybe that is why, they are amazing layers for sure!

Nice summary about GSL. Mine has retired, I think that she is in the neighborhood of 3-years old. I miss those 7 jumbo eggs-per-week. In the future when I need to replenish my flock GSL will be at the top of my list. Thanks for the information.

Hi, I had a chicken hawk, lst summer when it was sooo hot here, it spurred a young rooster to death, then pecked it's legs to peaces! I was amazed, I had always heard of chicken hawks, but never had expercied it before! I had a coyote carry one of my chickens off in broad daylight, across the field! The hot weather here in Kansas was in the 115 mark for a month, I guess everything was very hot and hungry! My chickens are free roaming, but I am very caucious now, and try to look after them when I can!

My favorite chicken was a gold sexlink/golden comet. She also exhibited the curious pecking, and it was quite endearing. Sometime in the future I will definitely have more of these fabulous birds. Thanks for the review.

Hi Haruna. No, I didn't do anything special. It was just her. She was very business-like about getting into the nest box, and laying her egg first thing every morning. I do have to say...that I did give her a meal-worm treat when I picked up the egg. And I made the joke that it was 'operant conditioning' or--- payment for her eggs. I think it was just that she was a fabulous egg layer. Thanks for your interest.

I have had 4 of these. We lost one to being egg bound, but the other 3 are great layers. They seem to always be at the top of the pecking order. They are really sweet too.

Enjoy them! They go up so -sniff- just so fast! Our BLACK SLs got big sooo fast, and their only about a month! But they are C-U-T-E!!!!!!

Oh I loved my golden comets. They where so friendly and would walk into the house if the door was left open. They where more like dogs than chickens. They would follow me around the yard. Jump in my lap if I was sitting. Jump on my back if I was head deep in the feed bin. But, I wanted to just have 2 breeds of birds not 6 so they went. I wish my BCM or Ameraucanas where that friendly!
Good luck and enjoy the fluffy friends.

Agreed. You do not have to do anything special...these gals just lay away! One of my Goldens has been laying for 2 1/2 years with only one short break for a molt.

Have to agree, they lay earlier than the rest and keep going and going like energizer bunnies. The only problem we have had is they don't live as long as the rest, guess due to the stress of laying so much. Otherwise, very sweet birds, very tamable and cuddly.

I have a red sex link and she is by far the sweetest and friendliest girl in my flock..I just love my Henrietta! Oh, and she lays lots of pretty brown eggs.

My ex batts are 6, i don't think they have a shot life span, and out of all my breeds the ex batts haven't been ill...

I have four that are about 14 days old. Very healty and I ordered from a very reputable hatchery and boy did I pay for it. I have four more coming on Nov 5th. Do you have any pictures of yours as adults?
