fantastic egg layers

my Profile picture is a great example of the colors of the hens, they are great egg layers and possibly the best mothers we've had.

Pros: Somewhat friendly when they are hand raised.
Cons: Lay well the first year, then after that, the eggs are defective.
We got our Gold Sex Links through our 4H program, so this could be for the breed, or the giant hatchery they ordered from.... These birds were so beautiful the first year we had them, their eggs were in abundance and were wonderful. We won the poultry show out of 72 entries, we did a great job keeping them healthy and happy. After about 8 or 9 months, though, the eggs were no longer great, the shells had issues with color, thickness, shape, you name it. They also had feather changes that I've learned can be a result of trace mineral deficiencies. I have other breeds who have benefited greatly from my deworming efforts, vitamin supplements, and they are amazingly shiny and healthy... however, the gold sex links continue to decline. Every egg problem you can imagine is happening, to include some eggs rotten upon lay. Learning from others who have raised chickens for decades, the chickens who are heavy layers tend to have reproductive issues that cannot be helped. Even from another hatchery, I would not go with this breed again.

have loved my sexlinks. VERY friendly. have laid every day minus maybe 2 for 2 years and now yes i too am having problem with 1. lays very tiny egg..i mean thumbnail size. the other still laying great eggs but she does skip a day here and there. i would not prob get again either. tho loved having eggs all winter this year!
Pros: Great layers, friendly, excellent foragers, hardy
Cons: Broody frequently
All my sex links (gold and black) are now 3 years old and still laying 5 eggs a week. They are the first girls to greet visitors (checking to see if anyone brought treats!) and will gladly sit with us when we sit outside with our coffee. They've never been sick or had any health issues. Their only drawback is how broody they are. They will sit on not only their own eggs but everyone else's too. We have to frequently force them out of the boxes to stop the broodiness. Overall, a great choice for anyone wanting an easy bird to raise in their flock.
Pros: Egg Production is amazing, friendly
Cons: Have had a few that drop eggs in the middle of the night or lay soft eggs here and there.
Pros: -great egg producers
-very friendly
-great for those new to raising chickens
Cons: -usually, eats almost about anything
-they sometimes can be broody for more than an extended time
These chickens are very friendly! They are great egg producers. My sex-links were laying about 5-6 days worth of eggs per week. They are very tame, not too docile and shy. They love to eat almost anything and are not finicky. My sex-links ate almost everything I gave to them ranging from old cereal crumbs to cottage cheese. Overall, awesome birds, especially for those new to raising chickens.

Pros: great layers, very docile, very people friendly, large eggs for there size
Cons: Loud, Mean to new chicks
I have 5 one year old hens , that have laid nearly every day since 20 weeks old, they lay a medium-large brown egg every day. My hens just let me pick them up and carry them around, or pet them. I love them to death but i recently got six new chicks to introduce and they aren't the best to them, but other than that they are perfect, i recommend them for first time chicken owners who want a lot of eggs

Pros: Kid-friendly, prolific layer, good size eggs
Cons: None
This is probably the overall best hen in my flock. She was the first to begin laying out of the breeds (EEs, Black Australorps, and Golden Comet) that I bought last Spring. She is my two-year old daughter's favorite hen and will allow my daughter to pick her up and carry her around with no fuss at all. When the weather began to get colder and I hadn't had a chance to put a light in the coop yet, all the other hens laid fewer eggs for a while, but not the Golden Comet! She was consistent with her egg-a-day all the way through! Great size eggs too, right from the first egg. Highly recommend this breed for laying!

Pros: Friendly, Fairly good layers, Pretty, Sex-linked
Cons: Could lay more eggs
Although our Black Sex Links lay better, our four gold sex links are pretty, friendly chickens.
Pros: Easily tamed, grow quickly
Cons: Eat to the point it concerns me.
I will update this as soon as she starts laying.
I have one Gsl in my flock, and she is the sweetest thing. Knew her name within a couple days, lets the kids mess with her, comes right up to me, and super docile with the other birds. Her eating habits however, concern me. Her crop is almost always burgeoning with food, and while it does empty a bit, she makes certain it is filled right back up to the point there are visible gaps between the feathers. Hopefully this will diminish as she grows up a bit, as she is only six weeks old right now. I expect her to have a problem with an impacted crop at least once in her life though.

Pros: sweet and sociable disposition, beautiful, prolific laying - first to lay, one every day for first year, huge eggs
Cons: Poor quality eggs and health problems due to too much laying and too large of eggs.

I first want to mention that I only have one gold sex link chicken (Gold Star) and personality and appearance she is one of my favorites. She was the first of my babies to lay and from that day on she gave us eggs daily that became progressively larger, larger, until they were the size of duck eggs. The shells became paper thin, they were often irregular with a dark maroon spot at the apex. The maroon/red tissue is also in the egg which otherwise is great with gigantic yolks. Although "Star" gave us an egg a day for the first 6 months her laying decreased dramatically after that, to approximately one egg per week as she is now two years old. She stopped laying this winter which seemed to help the egg quality tremendously but if she lays more than two times a week - thin shells, dropped from perch, maroon spots. I realize my experience with one chicken hardly makes valid the experience of this variety, but I also am taking to heart the review provided by user: Haveandtohold, which you can find above in this topic. The link provided, which is supports the idea that this poor chicken has been genetically altered to a point that is harmful to them. I will not buy high production sex links.

Pros: They lay large brown eggs 5/7 days a week
Cons: Their egg production slows down in the winter
We have one Gold Star named Phil. She lays huge eggs (2.7 oz!) and the eggs are almost perfectly round. They are also pretty quiet. We are definitely going to get some more of them!!
Pros: Big eggs daily, tough, very friendly
Cons: None
I have one 3 year old and one 4.5 month old. They are very friendly with me. Sometimes they drive me nuts because they get in my way. My older one has been a bit aggressive with the younger chickens but not to the point I was worried. My older chicken did get sick once but she got better and all I did was give her medicated chick food(no vet). I get giant eggs from the older chicken every day and an egg every day from the younger one. Both of the hens have started laying weeks before the other chickens. I would recommend this breed to first time chicken owners. They are great layers and pets.
Pros: beautiful, sweet when held
Cons: flighty, bold, can't wear shorts around them
Beautiful and sweet hens. I have 2. One of them is really bold and pecks me whenever she gets the chance. I cannot wear shorts around them because they will peck at the freckles on my leg(also, she has attacked my leg once when I was holding my cochin; I think she gets jealous). They are both hard to catch but they are really sweet once they are in my arms. I got them from tractor supply during spring break.

Pros: lots of big eggs
Cons: bit loud
Very sweet chickens. When I had to integrate some 10 week old pullets, I put them together with my ISA Browns, who didn't bully them at all. Mine have laid eggs every single day since they started. Plus, their eggs are so big that I can't close my egg cartons. They are a bit noisy, but not unbearably so.
Pros: Lays in winter/cold weather, Began laying at 17.5 wks, Lays daily, Not skittish, Friendly, Hardy, Not aggressive, Middle of pecking order
Cons: Loud squacker begging for treats & talks constantly, Not super cuddly, Drama queen
Our gold sex link Goldie (original name eh?! lol) is the diva of our flock of four. When she was a baby she was the first to whine and get insecure over new situations and surroundings and would cuddle up to us for reassurance and cry to us about it. Now that she is older she is the opposite of shy and skittish. She is a LOUD mouth when we are around her carrying on like a regular dinosaur to get treats and acknowledgment. But she doesn't squack nearly as much when we aren't around by any means. When she is being a loud mouth I am not joking this lady goes...BAAWWKKKKKKKKKK, BARRRKK, BOCC! It is quite humorous and annoying all at the same time. Although she likes treats and acknowledgment she isn't big on the cuddles or being a lap chicken. She is right in the middle of the pecking order with the other girls, and never tries to peck, bully, or trump the dominance of any of the humanoids. She is even sweet to our four year old son.

This chicken is a lazy bum and doesn't mind being cooped up when cold out, and often prefers being in the garage or coop when it is chilly. When she does have a hankering to go out in warmer weather she can get a bit too adventurous and seeks escaping through the backyard to the alley, but her bigger body keeps her from hopping very high. Speaking of a big, round body she is an awesome garbage disposal and will eat all sorts of scraps!

She began laying in the dead of winter with no supplemental heat and minimal extra incandescent light at just 17 weeks of age! She lays an egg every day, and her eggs are big. The weather in CO in the winter fluctuates from warm to freezing cold in short spans of time, but Goldie has been hardy and soldiers through no problem. If you are looking for a friendly, hardy bird that will produce eggs quickly and well, I highly recommend a gold sex link...if you don't mind the bit of drama they express lol!

(I got my sex link from Stromberg's and am quite impressed with their great quality of poultry)
Pros: Sweet, Smart, Friendly, Excellent Layer
Cons: Wants to Be a House Hen
My girl Lotus is my pride and joy. She lets 5-year-olds pick her up, comes running with that goofy chicken gait any time I go outside. She comes for snuggles, not for food. She lays a good 6 eggs a week, not slowing down in the winter. Her eggs are huge and she even laid a double-yolker for me once. That was a new and treasured experience for me.

Only issue I have with her is she walks into the house any time the back door is open. Even if she is shoo'd out, she comes back in the moment the door is open again.
Pros: Lays lots of large brown eggs, very tame
Cons: They all look the same-need leg bands to tell them apart, aggressive towards new flock members
I have 5 of these beauties! 4 hens and a rooster. One of the ladies lays a whooping 3-4 eggs a day! (#EggLayingMachine) anywho, they are great birds! Super friendly, don't spook easy. You can't tell any of them apart. I have leg bands on mine and still have to flip them over to see who's who. The other issue is that these ladies are aggressive towards new members of the flock. I'm talking peck the poor newb to the bone. But, once they have had their little temper tantrum they are ok. The rooster is a good rooster. Defends his ladies, gentle boy. He went through a phase of attacking me though, but a few good kicks got him back in his place, and have no issues since.
